Default Any reason not to open the oil cap while the car is running?

As an air cooled owner, I am always in constant discussion with my 993 as to the appropriate oil level and inherently suspect of Porsche oil level gauges and I am incredibly reticent to add oil.

So do every day I drive my GT3, when I am done I run an oil level check as I let it idle (I have to get out to open the garage door at one place so it is not a big burden to wait for the test to run). It has always been right in the middle or one notch up from the middle. I have gotten in the habit of taking a picture of the gauge cluster with the happy green bar. OCD is a real disease ....

Paranoid to the end, I had read that opening the the “engine” lid, resets the sensor or something to that effect. So yesterday I did that. Then I decided to open the oil cap to check for anything suspect (moisture, build up etc.). None was found, but I did notice a rather pronounced wooshing noise when I opened it. I assume that is normal, but I have never heard it on any other vehicle. It did not seem to go away in the ten seconds or so I had the cap off. I assume it is under pressure or something and creating a vacuum in the tank which is what I was hearing.

One, should I not do that again?
Two, is the wooshing noise normal?

All is well that ends well, but the oil level showed one bar up from the middle where as on the last ten or so tests it had been at the middle. I will run another test today and see.

Thanks for reading.

Normal and your level is correct, one notch up from middle (3/4) is optimum.

Your 993 is a dry sump car. When you take off the oil cap, you are taking the cap off the oil TANK which is only loosely connected to the motor by a series of hoses. In the GT3, which is not a true dry sump car, you are actually removing the cap from an engine mounted oil fill, and the whooshing noise is a vacuum leak. Drive far enough without the cap and you'll get a check engine light and all kinds of evil performance.

Two totally different engine architectures.

Nope, a GT3 is also a true dry sump car (like 993) with a separate oil tank.

FWIW I ran my .1 with the cap off (DOH!) for a short drive to get the oil up to temp so I could get a reading and got no check engine lights.

Interesting - the measurement works with FAL up... I haven't tried it but on my very slight downward slope outside my garage, the measurement doesn't start - it says the car isn't flat...

I kept getting too full, so i opened my cap, let out the pressure, and now its reading accurately.

The 991.1 is not dry sump, the .2 is and the .2 added a de-foamier unit as well.

991.1RS has been solid.
991.2RS makes rough noises when you come off the track..

Are you referring to 991.1 GT3, because every GT3 ever made for the last 21 years is dry sump. The only GT cars ever made that are not are the least expensive and most expensive (GT4 and 991 GT2 RS).
