Default New Speedster vs Old...wow, so much has changed

Has the true Speedster essence been lost?...so big...so many amenities....so heavy.....seems like more of tribute with a nod toward what a "real" speedster actually is and was all about...besides those dumb stickers....what's that all about?

(I have a '59 and a GT3....so,so,so different....'59 much slower but to me, more involved and more fun...."more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow")

Dude... compare any car from 1959 with its modern descendant. They ain't gonna be similar at all.

991 is massive...no one claims it's not...sad but truth of modern cars...they keep getting bigger and bigger to provide more stability blah blah

I'd personally love them to be smaller and less quick and more fun...guess that's why I've been buying vintage of late

It's the natural evolution and progression of technology. When push button phones came out, there were probably complaints over the loss of the feel of a rotary dial.

I guess I'm more thinking along the lines of what the Speedster was designed to be from the beginning...a stripped down, light weight more affordable option for drivers. It's paradoxical that the vintage Speedster's are so popular and command a premium over the roadsters and cabriolets that are more comfortable and easier to live with. Look at the first Dodge Viper...basic stuff to go fast....no bells-n-whistles. Why not introduce a light weight no-nonsense car that doesn't have all the comfort BS....roll up windows, maybe chorded door pulls, less insulation, minus the carpeting, manual top, 3-pedals only, etc......heck, Ferrari has done some of this with the Scud, Challenge, F40, etc..... Porsche could probably save money on the production and yet, sell them for a premium....there we go with the paradox again

Too bad they stopped making the Defender. My 59 Land Rover was pretty close to a 2015, even the doors were interchangeable.

But you'd better be awaken and don't count on airbags to save you.

One of my "Porsche" memories from the early 70's was riding in a buddy's Speedster down Hwy 9 in the Santa Cruz mountains. It was his 2nd one (he had totaled his first) and he was hell bent on showing me the Speedster would out handle the 914s the rest of us had, which had just come out.

Needless to say I felt fortunate I walked away from that ride that day. I still remember the feeling and sounds from that car. He had stripped everything out of it, there were no seat belts and the passengers side door latch was loose so I felt like my seat was going to fly out at any minute.

Want a fun smaller car the Boxster Spyder is the ticket. Only comes in a manual 5 less HP than a GT4, but drivers want 500 hp cars can’t have both.
