I never thought I would be researching exhausts on a Porsche 911 Motorsport car, thinking that stock must be one of the best exhausts out there to begin with, but here I am, getting caught up in it and perhaps sucked into the internet.

The exhaust thread seems to be for those who have decided that they will actually change the stock sound. But how many actually do exhaust upgrades on here? 10%? 25%? The majority? The few?

Is it one of those “must have” things (like clear side markers)? Or not?

Anyone did an exhaust and regretted it?

For those that have stuck with stock, does the sound get better with age (like many exhausts do)? I am currently at 400 miles.

Appreciate your thoughts!

Meh. Mixed bag with the exhaust stuff. I've had CEL issues in the past and I'm too impatient now to have self inflicted wounds. About all I'd do is a center delete at this point but fully stock (and warrantied) is my MO. Not worth the hassle, time or money for me.

I wish my GT3 RS sounded better and louder said me never.

It's the first thing I ever do. Cars are way too quiet from the factory.

Yes. On 16 RS had Dundon race headers w/side deletes and center 'black' series. What an amazing sound with no drone. Now that I have a 19 RS not sure what I'll do. Going to hang tight for a bit then maybe do something down the road.

Exhausts definitely break in a bit - I would wait a bit more to decide.

I'm at ~ 1k miles, doesn't feel like it needs an exhaust, but obviously this one is very subjective

I have tried oem , straight piped no mufflers and my last combo is just a rear muffler bypass .
My fave is the bypass by far

2. what style provides you with the best sound. LOTS of options here...

I've installed Sharkwerks bypass on both past and present GT cars with great success.

In my experience, the sound of the stock exhaust does not become appreciably louder with time. All my GT cars have sounded great but we’re just not loud enough. I did an M&M manufactured FVD stainless rear bypass on my last GT3 which deepened the tone and increased the volume nicely. On my new GT3, I went with a titanium bypass and tips from Akrapovic which maintains much of the factory tone whilst noticeably increasing the sound level. I have also plugged the vacuum lines to the exhaust valves which eliminates the artificial sound cut outs programmed into the car’s software. No regrets at all.

I’ve always done a full exhaust upgrade in all my GT3s. Whether Akrapovic, M&M, or Dundon. Stock, to me, is way too muffled, and bypass is a waste of money unless you have to comply with DB regulations like at Laguna. Just my opinion. But totally subjective. Regardless, my number one priority in selecting a system is performance first, sound second. I’ll deal with something louder than I’d like if it has the right gains. I’ll accept it for what it is to achieve the right performance result.

I LOVED my stock exhaust on my 991.2 GT3 until I made the mistake of riding in a friend’s with a BBi/GRP center delete. The volume and sound of it wailing once the side valves opened at 3,800rpm made a big enough difference to me to shell out $2k for some steel pipe. Crazy Porsche tax, but I didn’t care.

Put a Sharkwerks center delete on my 10 GT3 and first 15 GT3. Went with Dundon headers and stock center on my GT4. Picked up another 15 GT3 and put Dundon race headers on it. Now have an 18 GT3 and installed a set of Dundon street headers on it. Cant decide between Dundon's loud or quiet center muffler. Dundon makes outstanding products.

For me, one of the most pleasing noises in a 3RS comes from the side intakes, almost to the point where I prefer the sound of the car while accelerating through the mid range better than the shrill of the top end. I’d be concerned that a louder exhaust would drown out those sweet intake resonances.
