In-Gear + Door Open = Automatic Handbrake

It gets REALLY annoying when you open the door to align yourself to the kerb or a parking space. Is there a way to disable this either in PIWIS or by other means?

Electronic parking brakes have no place in these cars and the 991 implementation has been absolutely hideous...

This must be a PDK thing. Doesn't happen with a manual or at least hasn't happened to me.

Only happens when it is in gear. Wonder if the manual does it when you start to let the clutch out?

New Cayennes 958 have the same stupid feature.
Mirrors are good for backing, door open helps me pulling forward on the lift and such.

What happens if you get the car rolling a bit and then open the door...?

CRex 05-14-2019 02:32 AM

For us saddled with PDK the handbrake comes on even when we're in Neutral...

Good suggestion on rolling the car a lil more... last I tried with the car creeping under neutral the brakes came on like an anchor.

Porsche if you're listening, you're not building cars for idiots. Get rid of these bloody nannies!!!

You know you can keep this from happening with the door open by having your foot on the brake, disarm the parking brake, and then you can move the car with the door open. And you can thank lawyers for Porsche having to make this a feature.

What happens if you're jamming down the road and your passenger wants to bail? Does the emergency brake come on at any speed?

qbix 05-14-2019 12:26 PM

possible to see a curb in the side mirror. just lean up a bit.
this feature as stupid as it is I understand why its there. what I don't get is why Porsche would not make side mirrors move down when it reverse gear like BMW has. and that naturally can be disabled if someone doesn't like this feature

Scottykenneth 05-14-2019 12:32 PM

When i back in my driveway I usually pop the door open while in reverse( manual) to make sure Im a good length from the grass. Hasnt happend to me yet. I do remember one car I had tho if I would open the door in gear immediately the ebrake slammed on. ( annoying)

fxz 05-14-2019 12:47 PM

Really?? now i know how to drift in a tight corner

just have to open the door

RockyTopTenn 05-14-2019 12:49 PM

In my '19 with manual, I backed up in gear with the door open. No problem, no automatic brake, etc...

Can't say that I have tried that at speed before so I guess I can't answer your question

This may not be Porsche's doing, but EU/DOT regulatory requirements. My 2015 BMW M6 will do this as well, which is annoying. Even going into the ECU can't defeat this "safety" feature.
