Another white smoke thread

Hello guys,

I started my 2015 GT3 on Wednesday after work and had so much white smoke come out I was a bit embarrassed. After going up one floor in my building's garage I pulled over and shut the car down. I noticed the smell (burned oil) and the whole parking garage floor was full of it. I flat bedded the car to my local dealer and they reproduced it (confirmed it was oil) but didn't see any obvious cause and after a test drive, the smoking cleared and hasn't happened again.

For clues, this is the car's history (what I know of it)
- I bought it in January with 3K miles on it, never tracked per the previous owner. Mostly garaged in a super nice garage in Santa Barbara, CA.
- I bought an extended warranty from Porshce in AZ (they had a good deal on it)
- Took it to the dealer for oil and fluid changes. I took it back to the dealership for a high oil level warning a few weeks after that service.
- I've been to the track once in mid-April (TPMS crapped but that's another thread).
- I had been driving the car the week this happened with no warning lights (except TPMS which crapped out at the track)

The dealership can't pinpoint the cause so they're asking me to take it (after they install a new thingymabober to fix the TPMS) and come back if it happens again. Does anyone have any recommendations on what I should ask the dealership to check?

Thanks all!

Honestly that sounds normal. Every once in a while when I start up my 2015 GT3 it burns a ton of oil at first and makes a huge white cloud worthy of a pest control operation. It’s normal from what I’ve read. Because racecar.

My 2014 also smoked

My 2018 has not smoked once and burns no oil.

My 2014 and 2018 both smoked on startup - sometimes. Someone on the list said that, if you let it idle for 15-20 seconds, before you shut it down, it makes a BIG difference. I agree. Now, the only times my 2018 gives me smoky starts is if I forget to do this - which usually happens in the places that causes the most embarrassment ;)

On a flat 6 the oil doesn't drain to the case when u turn it off

It will happen, no harm

My 2019 991.2 GT3RS does that occasionally, and so did all my previous 991, 997, 996 GT3s. It is normal. Why is a dealer trying to find a problem where there isn't one? and why is the dealer filling oil to the top in a GT engine? no idea.

NVRANUF 05-11-2019 11:06 AM

My 2007 997 would do it on occasion.
My 2018 991.2 has done it once.... that I've noticed.. where it filled my garage with smoke.

I just got my 18 GT3... I backed it out of the garage to wash it the other day, pulled it back into the garage after I finished..., next time I started it, it pillowed white smoke for 15-20 seconds. I’m like wtf?!??? I honestly thought it was because I didn’t drive it before and after washing it. Hasn’t done it anymore though... yet. Weird cars these GT cars.

Just part of what makes it different and special from non GT cars. Pretty normal from what I’ve seen.

I wouldn't worry about it. My 991.2 GT3 does this from time to time. Seems to do it more when less of a cool down before shut down. In otherwords if I park it pretty hot it seems to throw off a bit of white smoke upon the next start up. Not sure if I am incorrectly correlating lack of cool off with smoke or not but seems to be the sequence. Same thing on my 997.1 RS. I seriously wouldn't worry about it and of course 911's have always consumed a little oil.

GBSCaptain 05-11-2019 12:19 PM

Noticed the same. If parked without a cool down; next startup will usually be a bit smokey for less than 30sec.

My 2015 GT3 used to do the same with the original F motor. No more smoke after dealer changed my motor after a failure at the track.. I think G motor doesn't smoke. my 991.2 gt3 did not smoke neither does my .2 3RS.

gt3

2015 occasionally with cold start and very small amount of oil consumption. 2018 no smoke and no oil consumption.

kyrocks 05-11-2019 10:47 PM

My 2018 GT3 does this occasionally.

RDCR 05-12-2019 01:00 AM

My 2015 smoked once after it had sat for 3 weeks. 2100 miles and 4 track days it's used about 400 ml of oil.
