Would You Own a Car Where You Couldn't See the Engine?

This is news apparently to the automotive press

https://jalopnik.com/would-you-own-a...ine-1834444482

"......When I went around back and opened the tiny lid, I was confronted with a pristine little cavity with two plastic fans, two little caps for coolant and oil, and not a hell of a lot more. I forgot. You can’t see the engine in a new 911........"

I have to admit that when I saw my first .1, I was put off by the tray with the little fans and wondering what good does that do for anyone. Does it bother anyone else?

I will reserve discussion about CLs for another thread!

"Don't care, just drive it"

Less to worry about.

Yes, it kind of does bother me. Think about all the other great cars, you can see the engines and marvel at their engineering. Also what's the deal with removing bumper covers to change air filters. What a PITA.

...and all is forgotten when you go driving!

The only reason this happens is because Porsche keeps raising and raising the belt line until it looks like you are looking out of a gun turret pill box. When the belt line was lower, you could see more of the motor, and the last time this was the case was in the 997.

Meh. Even my 570S has a fixed engine cover, can't see jack squat under there without unbolting parts.

One less thing to be worried about if it's clean or not.

Could be worse. Rolls Royce used to lock the bonnet covers on its engines, only to be opened by certified mechanics.

Bought both my 3's out of state. Taking it to DMV to get it registered is a blast as part of their checks is to look at the engine. First they go to front and ask you to pop the hood so you have to tell them engine is at the back. Then you show them two fans, two caps and a cf deck and they think you're jerking them around. Sometimes it feels good to be a bit of a jerk especially at a Cali DMV!!

Owned a lot of cars....actually think it's quite amazing you can garner so much performance from a machine and NOT see the engine....

This. If I could see the engine, I'd OCD out and always have to clean it. Now I just wipe down the CF tray and call it a day.

I liked seeing the engine in the 997. I miss it.
Im getting used to the 991 now I guess. Cayman and Boxster are worse!

Waxer 05-03-2019 05:09 PM

Just put 991 on lift and look up. There it is.

Our flat 6's are amazing, but wouldn't want it shown off like an R8. PAG doesn't dress up their engines. F cars R8's are dressed up nice.

robmypro 05-03-2019 05:29 PM

As long as i can hear it and feel it no need to see it.
