Professionally Driven 996 GT3 chases 991 GT3 at COTA
Last weekend at the Edge Addicts DE event at Circuit of the Americas, Pro Racing Driver Tom O'Gorman took my 996 GT3 for a few laps during the instructor session.
He points by a blue 991 GT3 at 4:00 in the video and does a pretty good job keeping up until a couple slides allows the 991 walk away. He also gave me some great setup advice in the video during the cool down, which was awesome from a Pro driver.
Because there is a 991 GT3 RS (1:20) and 991 GT3 (4:00) in the video, I thought I would share with my 3.8/4.0 liter friends over here. My little 3.6 mezger with skinny tires was working hard to keep up with the 991 "big **** gang," but it was an absolute blast.

For the street, I like the smaller 996 better. Definitely more analog. Lower it and put some wider slicks on, maybe different pads and you'll be surprised how much easier it will be to hang with the newer GT3's. That car is no Joke... 0-60 close to 4 seconds, turns the quarter mile in very low 12's, mid to high 11x trap speed. Keep the skinnier street tires on it and you'll have more steering feel than the newer cars.
It is more exclusive than the 991, and gaining value now too. I think fewer than 1000 996 GT3's were brought into the U.S.

Love the 991 GT3 and own one. But if you have driven a 996 GT3, it almost ruins the 991 for you. So much more raw, more analog. Makes you quickly realize how soft the GT3 has become.

Until you've driven an RS, which feels like sitting in a gun turret with guns blazing at 8500+ RPM. 991 feels bigger, faster, 996 if the back end steps out, it's on you to feather the throttle, no nanny to save you - feels more like a race horse wanting to run, and visibility is arguably better....just not as fast on the track.

But I agree that it's a big mistake to assume that every newer 911 is "better" in all ways than its predecessors.

I still say of the gt3's, the 996 was by FAR my favorite drive wise. And holy F that thing was fast on the track with just slicks and an alignment...talk about an INCREDIBLE car.

Whenever I ride with a pro I am aways amazed what they coax out of the car versus a mere mortal like myself.
One comment...two guys in harnesses with no HANS devices?
