VAG products have had them for a long time. I actually found it helpful in the TDI as occasionally I would be cruising in 5th rather than 6th. In the GT3 I cruise in 6th and keep reaching for another gear ....
Could it be it is a suggested gear for the task at hand to provide better mileage or performance? I smile as I ask this, but I'm serious, guys.
No, that’s the job of the annoying yellow shift light. The system has to recognize the current gear for the operation of the rev matching algorithm. There was no need to display that info, but I actually find it handy occasionally...

No, there's actually a little white triangle that comes on in the dash indicating when you should shift to the next higher gear for better gas mileage. You can turn the feature on/off.

What yellow light? There is no yellow light. There is a tiny little white triangle though.

Ok, maybe it’s not yellow (I do my best to ignore it). I’m talking about the upshift light.
Yea, similar, at gear shift positioned at 3, the indicator says in 2 which is very frustration.... believe machine or myself???
interesting, my Cayman GTS has the 6 speed and it will display what ever gear I put it in while rolling. Wonder why it's implemented differently on the GT3.
In my Touring, when at standstill, the indicator for the selected gear in the tachometer always shows "1", regardless of what gear I actually put in. I found out about this when letting a friend drive the car. He accidentally launched the car in 3rd gear several times because according to the indicator he assumed he was in first gear. Is this some feature I haven't figured out yet, or just an obscure bug?
That is not normal...you should talk to your dealer and ask for diagnosis...
