Default 991.2 Touring: at standstill gear indicator always shows "1"

In my Touring, when at standstill, the indicator for the selected gear in the tachometer always shows "1", regardless of what gear I actually put in. I found out about this when letting a friend drive the car. He accidentally launched the car in 3rd gear several times because according to the indicator he assumed he was in first gear. Is this some feature I haven't figured out yet, or just an obscure bug?

The easiest fix to this issue, which i have seen before many times, is to not let friends launch your car.

It uses wheel speed or drivetrain sensors, not an actual shifter position sensor so this is normal.

Wait wait wait... so you have to actually know what gear you're in? Like you have to be able to just magically know without the car doing the work for you? WTF that's horrible. Porsche needs to fix this issue ASAP!

Gear is calculated by wheel speed and RPM. Should be no factor.

There's a gear indicator? Next thing you know they'll install a radio.😂

Yup. It's normal. You need to find new friends.

Okay, so I'm trying to make sense of why there should be a gear indicator when you have a manual transmission. It just seems ridiculously funny, as some of you think as well.

Could it be it is a suggested gear for the task at hand to provide better mileage or performance? I smile as I ask this, but I'm serious, guys.

My guess is it was cheaper this way for Porsche as they probably planned to only make PDK.
