Default Advice - 991.2 GT3 on the highway

Hey Guys - For those of that really drive your 991.2 GT3s how is it on the highway. I'm looking hard at a touring purchase. This won't be my daily driver but I do like to drive my "Toy" car to work a few days a week and that's 120 miles round trip mostly highway. I'm guessing highway cruising at 75-80mph is 3000-3500 RPM. How is it? Annoying?, No Issue ?

Thanks
Jeff

The GT3 is definitely louder than my E63 at highway cruising speeds, but not so much that it makes me think I couldn't do long cruises in it.

Be careful. I couldn’t help but take my Touring out today (despite the iffy northeast weather) to put on a few break-in miles. On the highway, I’m afraid the car is gonna rip the driver’s license right out of my wallet!

Remember, 3k at 80 in a 9k car is like 2k in a 6k car. Feels very different than my 991.2 C4GTS PDK, but all in a good way.

4000 rpm in 6th gear is pushing triple digits on level roads.

The most horrible thing about driving the car is that you must exercise restraint.
Seriously though, the 991.2 GT3 Touring beats the 997.2 GT3 in poor road condition dips and uneven surfaces. I've been rattled by my 997.2 GT3 at road speed on a sunken area of the road - that suspension just threw me sideways. The Touring does not behave this way, it is much more compliant through bad roads, possibly the rear steering is one reason?

It’s loud, it revs too high for cruising in 6th, suspension is hard. Driving on the interstate in any GT3 at legalish speeds is annoying and a complete waste of time.

So i drive the 30 miles to work the back way.

It drive ve great on the highway but you need serious restraint. My 2018 GT3 has more road noise,,transmission noises and engine drivetrain noise than my 2017 Carrera GTS. The GTS was smoother and quieter on the road than my GT3. GTS felt more powerful on the street than my GT3 because the GTS is Turbo with 100ft lbs more, torque and on the street this really translates to the feel of a faster car.

It is actually a great cruiser and very stable. I've driven semi-long distances and commuted with my GT3; no complaints here! I've also driven my GT3 in the city (over VERY terrible roads) and for a semi race car, it holds up well!

If it isn't snowing it's my car of choice.

Cruising at 75 mph or slower it's just fine. Somewhere between 75 and 80 and certainly above 80mph it is somewhat annoying on the highway in 6th gear. It gets pretty loud it maybe a combination of RPM and exhaust valves opening? Other than the excessive noise it is totally fine as a cruiser. Suspension is really compliant for a sports car. For full disclosure I do have a center muffler bypass so that may contribute to the noise. If I was doing long highway runs in the touring I would absolutely try the stock center muffler.

My first ever drive in my GT3 Touring was 430 miles from Columbus to Snowbird Mountain Lodge in (about 7 hours) for Smokies GT last fall, mostly cruising on interstate.

It was comfortable in 6th gear. Even the LWB seats were great. The last hour or so was more fun—tail of the dragon. Drove it back home, too. No problems, totally fine.

Long boring interstate drives like that make Bose a worthwhile option.

Yes, 6th gear on the Manual is right around 25 mph per 1,000 rpm (uphill, downhill and level). Only time it’s not is if you’re on ice (or other slippery surface) and the tires are slipping...

So basically the best of everything you could want in a driving experience. Box checked. Just have to get one now.

Perfect highway car for the 100 or so mile drive you describe. I have an approx 100 mile each way, 99.5% interstate, and I love the GT3 for that run. This week I used the Cayman S, and for variety sometimes I throw in the 993 for a week. But, if I am sure of my parking situation on the other end (parking and being away from the car is most of my concern), then I take the GT3. Drone along at 80mph or so and, when your highway dips through Mexico, blast to 135+ for a few seconds.....I have three consistent straight open runs on my route, with a chance for two more if traffic free. Sport buckets perfect for that driving distance; XM radio helps if bored.
I do need earpiece for phone calls, or just decline until stopped --- did I mention "drone" along....I am running side and center bypass so it may not technically drone but it isn't quiet.

haha clearly you are getting people in different camps on this subject.

personally I agree with half the people here, its too loud at high speeds for cruising at 80 mph I'm not sure I could do it for more than an hour or two. I'm actually considering trading it in for a GTS Targa so I can just cruise for 6 hrs.

Thanks guys - this is very helpful. Sounds like it's borderline. This isn't my daily but I don't want to hesitate to reach for the keys and I don't want to just weekend car.
