I bet on a KERS system which will first debut in the GT3 and then trickle to the 992.2

If they can go 520hp with particle filter on the Speedster...will see at Geneva

Anyone else watching the microwave ignition tech developed by MWI AG and supposedly being fielded by the Fach Auto Tech Supercup team in '19? Interesting plug-and-play type technology that replaces a standard spark plug, reduces fuel consumption by up to 30%, and reduces N20 emissions by up to 80%.
Also of note is shareholder and former Porsche AG CEO Wendelin Wiedeking....

I'd think this could breathe new life into the production car ICE space especially for the Porsche GT cars if it proves reliable and legitimate. Consider an increase in output of 10-20% while becoming more fuel efficient and cleaner? That would certainly get the 992 GT3 and 3RS where they'd like to be with them performance-wise without additional weight or complexity. Probably too little too late at this point in the hybrid and/or turbo avoidance game but we can hope, right?

We can hope. While I am not a fan of turbo for GT cars, I think the reasons I'm not (mainly engine sound and linear acceleration) can be overcome in a turbo, then is it really the turbo that's the issue? Probably not. The GT cars will be there at some point I suppose. And like we all know.... the next GT car will be better than the last and many of us will line up for it.

I agree that Porsche may opt to can the NA engine sooner rather than later because of the mounting regulations, particularly in the EU (not in the US, of course - Trump is actually reversing Obama-era restrictions). What is unclear to me, is the particulate filter going to be in the US 992s? It is not required in the USA but will they come equipped with it anyway? The particulate filter adds weight to the car (and from what I have read, decreases horsepower to some degree as well). All new Porsche models are going to have the particulate filter (in the EU at least). I have broached this topic in the past - how does Porsche keep the playing field equal for the GT3 in the USA and in the EU if we do not require the filter here but they require it there? That alone changes the weight and the power output of the car. This is just one example of the hoops that carmakers have to take into account when researching and developing ICE engines going forward.
If the 992.1 GT3 is purely NA, I agree with many others that that will be the last of the purely NA GT3s, if it even makes it that far. I could see the 992 being turbo charged (as per the article) or NA hybrid. But what the hell do I know? It's pure conjecture on my part but it makes for fun discussion.

Maybe it is just like in the early 80 s when in the US, a catalytic converter was manditory and in Europe nobody really did care about that. Same thing with the Filter but the other way round. It did work for Porsche for some time since you were able to order the catalytic converter as an extra in Europe before it came as a standard by law mid 80 s. But back in the Days Porsche was a different company and not Part of Volkswagen.

Report out of EU are next batch of Euro Rs have particulate filter.

I have heard from folks that work for porsche that they are trying very hard to get something NA that can be sold globally but are having to engineer around more regulatory hurdles than the ever have before have not been able to draw any conclusions about which engine goes in the 992
Geneva can’t come soon enough.

as the current 992 transmission has room for hybrid components.. and GT3 is unabashedly an NA offering, i'll shoot a premature spray across the bow, FXZ style.. and say it's "CONFIRMED" that GT3 will NOT go turbo. It's quite logical in fact to see that 992.2 could go hybrid-NA.. just with a small battery to help with torquefill and possible 50 or so extra HP, while still keeping to a glorious 9000rpm + redline. If you've ever driven a 918 spyder, you will understand the incredible driving experience of this drivetrain.. you get ALL the NA sound, with ALL the NA throttle response, but with a massive dollop of low and midrange torque, with the NA engine fully focused on taking care of the top-end. I've had the pleasure of hustling both 918 and 918 Weissach's around a few tracks, and aside from the considerable weight of the car felt under certain braking situations.. it was simply otherworldly. Porsche would not have put this much development money into hybrid if this weren't the plan for trickle-down into other cars. 992.2 will be NA-hybrid, if you connect the dots, you will know this to be true.
in the meantime, here is an excellent video from the always enjoyable MRJWW on the pleasure of driving the 918... trust me, you WANT this to happen.. it's the ultimate drivetrain combo.
