Considering selling GT4 (and other cars) for ordering a new GT3. What are the considerations involved regarding
- performance characteristics
- cost of ownership / maintenance/ depreciation
We’re still learning track driving and I feel like GT4 is a good less scary car to do that. We’re so slow we haven’t had to change tires or brakes yet. =P
I like older gen cars for some of those old characteristics - hydraulic steering, hand brake, but not sure if I’m good enough to actually feel the difference. Certainly the GT4 is the best feeling car I have.
However I’m starting to think about the end of the warranty period and wondering if maybe there’s something to building a good relation with the dealer and always driving a new GT car.
How much would you be spending if you got a new GT car when it came out and sold it after a year to recoup some of the costs?
For a purely fun car that would be rarely driven, and mainly for the track, do you prefer
- buy and hold
- buy every generation and sell, always driving the latest?
more HP, better chassis, similar looks, newer interior and infotainment (don’t know if this is a plus or minus)
GT4 is a great car to learn car control for track, better balance, less HP (much better when learning), smaller feel to the car, manual transmission more fun (for me, YMMV), etc
a well driven GT4 with camber plates, toe links, guards diff and DSC, R7’s or Pirelli DH’s will give 991.1 and earlier GT3’s a run for their money!

at your point in tracking career I would stay with what you have or try the new GT4 if you can score an allocation (I,e. Once the recession hits) if warranty is a concern...
Consumables like pads and tires are more $$$ for GT3 than 4 and because of weight and rear engine design, you go through them quicker in the 3 than the 4
power favors GT3
Involvemnt/ analog experience favor GT4
fun factor equal (but different) IMO
Or you could add a few items as you go and continue driving the GT4. TPC DSC with their toe links, Tarett camber plates for the front and Dundon's headers. The GT4 has a very reliable engine. I have to believe Porsche will take care of 3rd gear out of warranty.
Cost - the cheapest car is generally the car you already own. So if money is a significant factor, I'd stay in the GT4.
PDK - If you don't care about PCM upgrade/back up camera and are down with PDK, then a .1 GT3 is a tremendous option. 9K redline paired with the PDK-S makes for a much more thrilling track experience FOR ME. Others will disagree. But it's special. The motor blowing up is a risk, but so is third gear going out in your car. And Porsche stands behind both esp. the GT3 motor issues.
.2 GT3 - If you have the $$$ it's the best of all worlds. Unless you have even more $$$ and then you go for a .2 RS
My two cents - a GT3 on the track is awesome and for most of us it's an itch that needs to be scratched.
I also found the 991.1 3.8 to be the most thrilling of all the 991 variants and I've owned them all including .2RS. That thing is mean and sounded angry every drive. The last 400RPM sounded like it was gonna blow every time. It was awesome!

GT3, no question for me. GT4 eventually gets somewhat boring. I have never been bored by a GT3.
