Default SOLVED: What's That Click Noise?

Ok, I know it's normal. I'm not complaining or worried. I'm just curious what it is and how it works. I've heard it in other cars as well.

.2 GT3 manual transmission. When you start the car up and get going in 1st, there's a sort of loud click/clank noise from the rear wheels. Like something disengaging. This is without using the parking brake. Just parking with the car in gear, for example.

I assume it's some sort of automatic parking brake even when you don't use the actual parking/e-brake?

Y'all probably just don't notice it. A lot of cars do it. I think it only happens when I go from reverse into 1st. Like when you back out of a parking spot.

I think with other cars people say it's the brakes. Like if the car has a floating caliper design it's the pads clacking or something?

I don't hear it in my touring. It could be the hill hold function which is using the rear parking brake but it shouldn't be a clicking/clanking type noise unless its the rear caliper sticking.

I find the GT3 hill hold usually only activates on pretty steep inclines vs my M2 hill hold which activates on even the slightest incline.

Nah, it's not the hill hold. It does it in flat parking lots. Only once you start the car up and back out then go into 1st and start to move. I know it's normal. It happens in lots of cars. Just curious what it is exactly. Happens in every other GT3 I've driven too...

EDIT: yeah after a Google search it seems it's from the brake pads. When you change direction, like from reverse to a forward gear, the pads slide/shift slightly, causing the clack noise (like two billiard ***** hitting). There is space between the pads and the caliper to allow for expansion when hot. So it only happens when the car is cold and you first start it up and go from reverse to 1st.

I thought maybe it was some sort of auto parking brake or something. Guess not.

Ceramics. I live in the SF Bay Area, so I guess a decent amount of humidity.

My car with PCCB's does not make that noise, and I'm pretty aware of noises like that. Is it a steal brake thing?

Hmm... are you in SF? Would be interesting to have someone else check it out. I though it was normal haha

Yes this happens and makes a clack when the wheels reverse directions. But it usually goes away once enough brake dust and crud gets caught inside the calipers and pads so there isn’t much room to move around (and when they do, they hit brake pad crud instead of metal caliper directly).

Four,
Thanks for bringing this up. It has happened to me only once. Initially I thought it was something wrong with the lift function as it happened as I pulled the car out of the driveway, but went away quickly.
I live in Roseville, CA.
Jack.
