Default Advice on GT3 vs GT3RS vs GTS vs Turbo (991 / 991.2 / 992)

Hey forum,

Im new here to the forum, was looking for some advice from experienced porsche owners and general car enthusiasts. I decided im in the market for a 911 and would love to hear your thoughts on different versions based on information below.
Im married, 2 kids, in my early 30s and have previous owned a 350z manual, 335i auto, 135i manual, c5 z05 manual, just sold my 2014 nissan gtr and currently still holding onto my 2007 z4 m coupe (manual). Live in southern california.
I had originally set my goal to buy the nee 2019 mclaren 600lt but recently drove a 2016 991 gt3 rs and realized it is a better fit for me as its $75k less, will likely depreciate less, and most importantly i started feeling like the 600lt was too flashy for me.

So ive been doing a lot of research and shopping and realized that maybe the 991 gt3 rs is the right fit, but maybe not? I drive about 5000 mi per year probably only 33% freeway. My commute to work offers high speed turns that are flat, uphill and downhill. Not many cops. Not many cops on this route. Have never been to the track with my gtr mainly because of time, but will have more time in the future and plan to learn using my z4 m coupe and then transition to whatever nicer/faster car I buy.

So here are my note about the different 911's that i started considering.
  • 991 gt3 rs pdk
    • Pros: amazing looks and performance, Awesome seats,
    • Cons: Pdk only. Out dated interior tech.
    • Pricing: low prices around $170k right now. Theoretically should hold value really well.
  • 991.2 gt3 rs pdk
    • Pros: Pretty much same as above but faster and even better looking, not sure if they updated the technology stuff (screens, gps etc)
    • Cons: Pdk only. DEALER MARK UPS
    • Pricing: If I built one to what i want it would be about $205k, but the dealer mark ups are around $30-50k right now and pretty much any dealership that has one in stock is $250k+. I'm not going to do that. If i could get a dealer to sell at MSRP i would consider this.
  • 991.2 gt3 manual
    • Pros: Good looks and seats similar to above, and manual transmission
    • Cons: Not quite as good looking to me as the GT3RS and slightly slower. DEALER MARKUPS
    • Pricing: My build out was around $150k, and if i could get one like that i think this would be my first choice. However, none of the dealers are going to have one that is less optioned around $150k and they all have huge markups, so that most are around $180-200k. Similar to above, no way i'm going to pay all that money over MSRP (No offense to you guys who did here).
  • 991.2 carrera gts manual
    • Pros: Lower price, good torque, good aftermarket support to cheaply and easily go over 500hp/500tq
    • Cons: Not as good looking as GT3 models, much less aggressive body styling, less performance than GT3 series. Coming from a GTR might feel too slow.
    • Pricing: My build price was around $140k. I am not sure about mark ups on these yet, checked some local dealerships and they seem pretty rare to be in stock.
  • 992 Carrera S
    • Pros: Available in Manual. Same 450hp 3.0L TT GTS type performance for less price. I dig the new styling and its wider looking which looks great. Stock wheel options look amazing. New technology with bigger screen and comfort access among other things.
    • Cons: Not out until next summer. Because it's not out yet the pricing needs to be taken with a grain of salt.
    • Pricing: Already available on porsche.com - starts at 113k (about 7k less than the GTS). I built one and could be happy at $125k, but the manual option is not showing up yet. read online manual option will be released soon.

My gut feeling says to go with the 2016 991.1 GT3 RS. The sound from that car alone is a huge selling point. The outdated tech stuff doesnt bother me all that much - im in it to drive it.
If any of you guys or gals have driven a variety of these id love to hear your opinions, especially if you think the GTS/992 Carrera S are "fast enough."

Thanks!

Only you know what is fast enough for you.

Honestly you sound like a 991.1 turbo would be a good choice for you. Once you decide you want a more track focused car than GT3/RS.

Completely agree. 991 TTS are awesome values right now and will not feel slow at all compared with your GTR and can be tuned like crazy. Aftermarket exhaust options are plenty as well.

P. GT cars are on a class of their own... you drove one already so you know what to expect. It’s truly a drivers car... very few DD ... but some do. P. Turbos are more tamed when compared to the GTs... Turbos are DD oriented... GTS/T models are regular 911s w/ turbo engines... but they don’t deliver the same level of rawness of the GTs nor the same level of performance of the Turbos. It’s truly a personal choice... for me, I realized that I wanted a true drivers car / rawness ... so my first P is a .2 GT3. I’m over the moon with the car... can’t stop driving it... eager for the weekends to take it to the road.... such a special machine. I did look into the .1 RS and .2RS ... also into the GTS and T... Even looked at the Audi R8, but decided that the .2 GT3 was the sweet spot for me.

Looking over your pros and cons for each, I'd still take a 991.2 GT3 manual over all of the others in a heartbeat.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Looks like the GTS and T both have a lot of potential with COBB tunes...but then i have a voided warranty, right?

991.2 Turbo S for a fun DD with good tech and great performance on street or track plus a backseat, GT cars are primarily for a weekend car and a bit showier.......GT cars do hold value better with LOW miles, so propensity is to not drive it as much as possible as a DD, if value is main concern..........I love my TTS as the 4 modes changes the personality of the car and sport plus mode makes it perform out of this world......you can add exhaust if you think the sound is too mild for you..........I think stock sounds fine in sport or sport plus.....car is lightening fast........

I agree, its the dealer markup that's stopping me.

It obviously all depends on the main thing you want. If your main interest is getting involved in the driving, running through turns on deserted roads and feeling everything the car is doing, then GT3 or GT3/RS is the way to go. If you want a 3 pedal car with a standard manual, then I'd opt for the GT3. Slightly slower (not enough that you'll feel it), but the manual makes it that much more involving and fun. If you prefer the PDK, then go for the RS if you can get one (I'd vote for the .2, but absolutely nothing wrong with the .1). On the other hand, if you think you'd really rather have something more comfortable and less hardcore, with back seats that are somewhat reasonable for small humans, but still fun through curves and fast in a straight line, then go for the Turbo or Turbo S. And finally, if the cost and hassle of the GT cars and the Turbo make the entire experience less fun (to that point that you're going to be worrying about miles), as others have suggested go for a Carrera T. Fantastic driving experience, plenty fast, and a really good car.

Markups are trending negative... when I first started looking they were at $30k/40ks for the GT3... I was able to secure one for a then decent ~$15k in September... but the specs were what I wanted. Lately I've seen ADM at 10K for few remaining specable allocations...

Ryan from DDW (who help me secure my car) has two very decent red specs (https://www.ddwpartners.com/2018-Por...-85255/6552600) (https://www.ddwpartners.com/2018-Por...-85255/6492291) not sure if they are still available... He is also has some GT3RS and maybe able to help you... but the RS are commanding a higher ADM v. GT3.

Get a GTS Targa. Does it all and the top goes down.
I have GT3 Touring and 997rs. It's the best for daily activity.

991.1 Turbo S or 991.2 Turbo S (let your budget decide). Add Cobb, Kline, DSC, IC, and redo bushings and springs.

If you're worried about depreciation or resale, don't buy any of the cars you listed. Buy no car, so no depreciation.

I had a 991.1 GT3 RS, replaced it with a 991.2 GT3 RS and miss the old car already, I also have a modified 991.1 Turbo S which serves as a daily too (RS is too flashy). If I could only keep one, the Turbo S would be the one, it does everything that the RS does but better, except sound beyond 7400rpm because the RS keeps revving to 8500rpm (my new one have not seen more than 4800rpm, but it goes to 9k rpm), and braking because it carries another 250 lbs and doesn't have the drag of the RS.

Personally, the GT3 (the regular one) doesn't do it for me, except a Touring with a manual transmission, but feeling like a poor's man 911R, I would rather go for the real 991R.

Have you driven a PDK and a manual?

Have you driven a turbo, GTS, and a GT car?

Have you sat in LWBs?

One will speak to you.

And that one wont have rear seats for the kiddos. Lol.

This might help...

Keep in mind that tires may be better on the newer cars.
