Porsche is very good at gearing (particularly in GT3). They are going to have to adjust final drive at a minimum as even the Carrera gets 21" rear wheels now. I bet the new 8spd will be a significant performance advantage. They may just add a gear between 6th and 7th together with a new lower R&P (this would help), but I also wouldn't be surprised to see an entirely new gear stack (with closer ratios) for the GT3/RS which would help even more...

My 911 is well under 900kg - makes a huge difference to lose that sort of weight. It's possible that emissions and consumption constrainsts could push cars in that direction, but electric cars will never be that light without a big breakthrough in battery tech.

I read in panorama magazine that 8th gear will NOT be an overdrive gear. PAG going to the 8 speed from 2 to 4 shafts. This re engineering is to make room for an electric motor. Welcome to the future.

In the current Carrera PDK, both 6th and 7th gears are already over-drive gears. With an 8spd, there will still be a minimum of 2 overdrive gears (and likely 3). GT3 could be a different story...

Using 4 shafts instead of 2 may change the way the overall ratios are achieved, but gears 6, 7, and 8 will all be quite tall in the 992 Carrera PDK...

I read final ratios are exactly the same. My comments are based on the GT cars. I dunno know about the Carrera S's. Again this re engineering of PDK was solely to gain the real estate for going hybrid.

I don’t get Panorama anymore - are you saying they’ve already published final drive ratios for the 992 GT3??

The article clearly stated, final drive ratios will remain the same.

Here you go regarding the 55kg of weight increase

Body 12kg
Particulant filter 10kg
Gearbox 20kg
Wheels ? Guessing 4-5kg
Other ? 8kg

Total 55kg. Still wondering about the 8 speed and use in the GT3. I wonder if they might cast the casing of this heavy thing in Mag to claw back some of the weight increases

i don’t think it’s a forgone conclusion that the 992 GT3 gets the 8 speed PDK, when
1 there is no functional benefit 2 they already have a 7 speed geared for track use, 3 the GT3 doesn’t have to use the same PDK gearbox as Carreras (note the 6 not 7 speed manual), 4 last but not least , the GT3 is about lightness and anything that unnecessarily adds 15-20 kg can and will likely be eliminated!

991.2 4S coupe PDK = 3.329lbs/1510Kg

992 4S coupe PDK = 3,487lbs/1582Kg

total curb weight increase = 158lbs/72Kg

If fully leveraged with optimal gearing, an 8th gear would be very functional and faster. I don’t know where the break-even point is with respect to a weight penalty, but if it weighed nearly the same a closer ratio 8spd would certainly be faster in every discipline.
