Lithium Ion Know How
I wanted to share some valuable knowledge to those of you with these Lithium Ion batteries.
We have sold two of the Porsche Lithium Ion Lightweight batteries that are a factory option on the GT3/RS/R and have learned some valuable knowledge in the process.
The first sale went well and we had no issues. The second one we sold the customer called us several months later when he went to install it and claimed he had a "dead" battery, apparently verified by Porsche of Santa Barbara. We granted the return.
Upon receiving the battery and scratching our heads why a $4000 battery would have gone bad, and trying to put some money back in our pocket for race season we decided to read the manual for the Porsche Charge-o-mat pro and found this very useful information:
So, for those of you with a "dead" lithium ion, do not toss it. Take it out of the car (in case something goes wrong) and try this procedure. Our understanding is that without use (out of the car at least) the battery enters some sort of storage mode and drops the voltage to roughly 50%. Using this procedure turns the battery back on and allows it to charge. Anyone with more experience feel free to chime in!
We are now selling this "once installed" battery well below cost if anyone is interested.
