Over Revs - yet again!

Yes, it's mostly about shifting into too low a gear for the speed of the car (only way to record a serious over-rev). While it may be possible to record a few Range 1 over-revs by bouncing into the limiter (I'm not sure if it still is in the 991 or not), these are not important nor dangerous to the motor. I don't remember the threshold RPM that defines each of the Ranges, but hitting the limiter shouldn't push you beyond Range 1 (I think over 9k but below 9k2). The accepted wisdom is that Range 1 and 2 are inconsequential, but 3-6 can be more problematic and potentially voids your engine warranty for a fault that can be traced to over-revving.
Yeah I've never had an "over rev" then. Man... you'd have to really drop a few gears to do that in any normal driving situation. Like going from 6th to 2nd at 80mph or something.

But if you are accelerating and shifting out of 2nd gear at redline (82mph) and select 1st gear instead of 3rd gear, then you have a problem. Or downshifting from 5th gear at 120 mph and choose 2nd instead of 4th...

FWIW, on 997 GT3's and 991RS I have bounced of rev limiters in 2nd (rarely) 3rd 4th and 5th (more then a couple times) and never had a car with any overrevs. Been meaning to ask dealer to read it out on 991RS but I keep forgetting.

On these GT cars, the six over rev ranges are separated by 200 rpm increments. So, at 9,001 rpm you'll potentially ding the DME in Range #1. At 9,201 you'll start pinging Range #2. And so on and so forth.
Non GT have 400 rpm ranges but they start lower with about a 7,600-7,800 redline.

I've looked at a couple of cars with range 1 and 2. One car had a couple in 3 and all were CPO cars.
I'm currently looking at a 991.1 GT3 with 1974 range 1 revs. That works out to 658 revolutions. These would have most likely been caused by having the car in sport manual and running to red line. The car has 11,500 miles and I'm not worried about them. Would I rather not see them? Sure. However, if the rest of the car checks out I may take it. The thing I worry about the most is getting a car with zero hits which was getting banged cold on short trips to and from C&C.
Buy the person then buy the car.
