AP: "GT3 4.0 engine better than CGT, best ever
#31
I have driven some of the "greatest" engines in the world. (360 stradale, 458, f12 many porsche GT3 versions, Lambo v10...) and IMO the 991.2 4.0 is the best. Not the most power or torque but the response, top end thrill and the flat 6 wail is epic. This is all opinion, but if I could have any engine in my sports car the 4.0 would be it.

I bought AP's hype when the 991.1 GT3 came out... then the engine fires, then production completely canceled for the rest of the year. Then a complete reset.
AP is a glorified corporate salesman - a marketer's dream. But I quit believing anything he says back in 2014.

I am starting to think Porsche AG had AP make these ridiculous statements for entertainment purposes at HQ.
It gives then something to laugh about in between meetings.

The BMW V12 in the McLaren F1 is pretty nice too:

The "best" engine ever is a open statement that you can combine a lot of factors: reliable power, oiling, engineering, ect.
If you read further than the HP and Nurbring lap times....the 991.2 motor is a huge leap in "street car" engine technology over the 991.1 and anything else Porsche has built. The oiling in the crankcase is finally something to brag about (even over a Metzger). I was considering a 991.1 GT3RS...until I read in depth about the internal changes to the crankcase, oiling ect.....the delta in cost is worth a more robust engine
Im 500 miles into my new car, drive it every day.....and I think the engine is magic (as well as the gearbox) in bone stock form....with a bone stock exhaust
And ive driven a Carerra GT (on slicks at the track at speed), 430 SCUD, 500 ect...they are cool exotic toys.....that would implode at 1/4 the time out of the new 991.2 engine
I even still own my 997.2 3.8 RS....the car is very analog....but from an engineering standpoint the 991.2 GT3 is quite an achievement over the old car
U want awesome sound...race a 73 RSR, 3.0L with close to 400 HP on open exhaust...nothing better.....but you are $30K deep in a rebuild at 20 hours if it doesn't self destruct before that
North of 500 HP out of a NA flat 6 with low end torque, rated for 100 hour low cost rebuilds at race use....is honestly amazing in race car engines....and Porsche nailed it

Here is an old article on Jalopnik (http://jalopnik.com/the-convoluted-h...lik-1636980042 ) The CGT engine - designed for an F1 car for the 90’s as a 3.5L V10 (program was scrapped), then dusted off for use in a new LMP1 Porsche as a 5.0L and a 5.5L V10 (program scrapped and money put into a new Cayenne program) then the engine was dusted off one last time altered to a 5.7L V10 and actually used in the CGT.
Hard to imagine this engine won’t go down as the ultimate Porsche engine used in a street car.

-Compression ratio 12.0 vs 13.3?
-Redline 8,300 vs 9,000?
-HP per liter 106 vs 125?
-10 years ahead in development, central crank oiling.....
-port vs direct injection?
-Both are derived from full race engines.
-Both have about 11.2 1/4 mile time.
The sound of the CGT is epic but it is different than the 4.0. I prefer the sound of the 4.0.
How is the CGT V10 better? More HP and 4 more cylinders??

What makes the CGT V10 great is the chassis, drivetrain and car that it's mated to.
Put the same engine in, say, a Cayenne, then not so much.
