price of speed is right. more power puts exponentially more wear on brakes, tires and other components.

True. That's where I try to be. Saving brakes and tires and treating DE like an enduro event

Getting slightly more life out of the slightly cheaper Hoosiers.

Hoosiers last 4 days @ $2000 mounted. ~ $500 a day
RE10 pads last about 10 track days. ~ $75 a day
Front rotors about 16 days, rears 60 days. ~ $150 a day (ST a bit cheaper after the $13K buy in)
20 gallons are gone in 1 hour, or 80 track miles. ~ $150 a day
When not instruction ~ $400 per day in track fee’s.

So about $3000 a weekend adding oil changes / plugs and a hotel.
You can half that by going 4 seconds a lap slower.

Is a coke ***** cheaper for a weekend?
I’m less informed on those cost of operations...
LOL! Nice summation!

Definitely feel your pain. I have a GT4, so a bit cheaper on average, but still pricey to run. I thought moving up to a 991.2 GT3 or GT3RS would be a logical progression for me, but now I’m reconsidering. Once you get beyond the insult of paying 20k+ over MSRP for the privilege of buying a GT3 or RS, and then spend several thousand bucks to get the car ready for the track (rollbar, harnesses, upgraded rotors and pads, alignment), you then have very high consumables costs for tracking. This positions the car awkwardly, IMO. It’s clearly designed/marketed toward track use, and is therefore somewhat compromised as a street-only daily driver. I think its potential is wasted as a hard-parker at weekend cars-n-coffees. And yet is it financially viable to run a $170-200k car regularly on track at a cost of $2-3k per weekend, and at a risk of a $17-20k liability each time (most DE insurance policies have 10% deductibles)? It’s a serious financial commitment—my guess is that you’d need an income of $750k+ a year, with no mortgage debt, college for kids already saved for/paid for, retirement savings set, and/or no other leisure activities such as travel, etc., in order for 20+ trackdays a year with a new GT3 or RS to work. That or live someplace other than NY or CA. 😬
Would it actually be cheaper to buy a decent 997 Cup Car at 90k-ish and run that 20 days a year? The up-front and maintenance costs of a Cup car, even with engine and transmission rebuilds, may be cheaper over 5 years than spending 200k on a new GT3 or RS and running it 20 days a year on track. And definitely safer.
Also makes me seriously consider a ZL1 1LE Camaro or Shelby GT350R for track/street dual duty. Although both of those cars are heavy and reliability may be a concern.
Bottom line, this is a very expensive pastime. Might need to look into fox hunting or polo instead. 😁

cup cars are about 4-8k per hour depending on how you are spending that hour (DE or Test or Race)

IMSA weekends are 30-40k plus any damage.

It's at the end of your signature, C.J.--"financial ruin"! Thanks for the numbers. Is that 4-8k/hr for a new 991 Cup or also for an older 997 Cup?

Last week spent almost $4k on a roll bar & harness setup... then almost $7k on an annual track insurance policy... safety is more expensive than speed.

I estimated about 2,500 to 3K per track day in the 2RS...….worth every penny!

Sub 2:20 laps at Sebring are expensive for us wannabe drivers

just an FYI guys, Spectro Racing has a 10% off at TrackdayTire.com with the code SPECTROVIP

This thread is really scaring me from upgrading from the 996, which I feel is not so bad on consumables, comparatively.

Sorta why I'm in a 718 CGTS instead of a .2 GT3 which I wouldn't pay ADM for and really don't care to attack CL wheels in my declining years. It won't run sub 2:20 at Sebring but it will run sub 2:26, with a hack driver, on RE-71R street tires for 1/2 the consumables and buy in cost of a GT3.

I get better life from brakes using endurance-focused pads (the new Ferodos) and Apex rotors, but I'm down to 3 days per set on MPSC2 tires (and it's 2 fast days plus 1 frustratingly slow one), so Hoosiers seem to make sense. But then I'd need a trailer.

Sebring kills brakes.
My car and Sebring are pretty much the worst car scenario.

Very informative thread, and timely too. I stumbled upon it a few days after having calculated the cost of my first six track days with the 991.2 C2 GTS Cab I bought earlier this year and I was shocked; front pads gone, rear pads almost so as well, front rotors won’t last much longer, a set of P Zero that I only used twice on the race track while waiting for the Michelins to arrive are deformed on the outer edge, the MSC2 tires I had fitted afterwards will only be good for 2 or perhaps 3 more track days, racing brake fluid, plus 4 hotel nights, about 3,000 km to/from the race tracks plus highway tolls, 1.7K (Swiss francs; about the same in USD) for a two-day course in a Hockenheim, some 500 liters of fuel used on the race track, helmet, suit (well, this one wasn’t required but it’s a nice Porsche suit)...

An expensive hobby it is! But I’m still determined to signing up for PDC next year. You only live once.

Re 10 are endurance and i had ferodo and re10 lasted longer. Sebring i think is harder in brakes than any of our tracks here in ca. Maybe auto club that 4th 2 turn 3.

Peter you broke the cardinal rule. Never add up the receipts.

My 997 antique is in that ballpark except tires are1/2 the cost for nitto.
