Hi, Rennlist- Anthony here with NS2 Media. We've been with Rennlist now just over a year, and what a ride it has been! We have worked with over 150 members to assist with photo-realistic renderings to help determine the final spec for cars such as the GT2 RS, GT3 RS, GT3, Panamera, Macan etc. We have also worked with many more on designing, renderings, providing and sourcing vinyl. We have had some amazing opportunities as a result of joining this forum, and our business would not be where it is today with out the support and generosity of the Porsche community, so for that we thank you all! :)

Throughout the journey's ups and downs we have realized there is a significant lack of information about Porsche related vinyls. Where is the best place to purchase? Should the stripes go over or under the PPF? Why does the factory charge 2,000 USD when I can find a kit online for 50 USD? In many projects of our own with members here we have run into all sorts of issues such as improperly fitting kits, botched installations, incorrect or unmatched vinyl colors and finishes etc.

I decided we should create an official database for Rennlist users to create a discussion platform for all things vinyl related.

We encourage everybody to post their custom vinyl striping on their Porsche GT cars! Share photos of your striped or liveried 991 whether CXX or aftermarket, experiences with your installer/vinyl company, specific vinyl colors you've discovered that match OEM Porsche colors or trim, anything you would have done differently, things you are not happy about with the install, pet peeves on other stripe kits, etc.

Here is a very special PTS spec project we had the pleasure of working on. The famous "@oakgreenmetallic" with OEM CXX Matte Platinum 911 R style side stripes.

With this thread, it is our mission to assure no Porsche GT car is left behind when it comes to a quality, properly fitted vinyl kit that the owner is fully satisfied with.

I want to kick off the discussion with something I have been noticing when it comes to 911 R side stripe kits. We have provided design and consulting services for over 50 911 R side stripe vinyl kits. In a typical 911 R side stripe kit design we will create a series of renderings to help select the general colors for the main stripe and the "PORSCHE" lettering. The next step then is to help the client decide whether or not the stripes will be done via CXX, or an aftermarket company.

Doing the stripes via CXX adds a perceived value to the car, and assures the stripes will be properly fitted, and of course appear as OEM as possible. When done from the factory, the 911 R side stripes are cut, trimmed, and fit in a very specific fashion (though this isn't to say sometimes the factory gets a vinyl color wrong, or install technique varies from vehicle to vehicle). When it comes to aftermarket 911 R side stripe kits, typically a lot of faith is placed in the installer to reference photos online of an OEM kit to assure everything is fit properly. It is important to note that even if an installer masters the fitting, it is still possible the actual vinyl kit purchased by the client is using the incorrect version of the "PORSCHE" logo, has the logo centered incorrectly, or has incorrect stripe dimensions.

Here is an example showing the characteristics of an OEM 911 R style side stripe:

You will note:

• The stripes DO NOT wrap around into either of the wheel wells. They are actually trimmed short. Doing this saves the leading edge of the vinyl from excessive stone chips that could potentially destroy the portion of the stripe on the fender or rear quarter panel. When the stripes are wrapped around into the wheel wells this is the easiest way to tell it is a non-OEM stripe kit.
• The stripes also DO NOT wrap fully around the edges of the door. I have noticed though that some 991.2 CXX cars DO have the vinyl wrapped around the edges. So I think this portion of the install at Porsche is usually dependent upon the installer at CXX.
• The "PORSCHE" logo is centered in reference to the door
• The rake of the stripe follows the rake of the door's lower shutline, rather than being ground level. I have found this to vary between some CXX kits and 911 R's however though following the rake of the door is most common.

Here are several photos from 1Gunner showing his OEM CXX 911 R side stripes. You will see the install is consistent with the criteria specified above, but unlike most 911 R's has the vinyl wrapped around the door edges:

Now, this isn't to say any aftermarket kit that isn't installed to OEM CXX specifications is "wrong"- but we just wanted to detail these nuances for members that are as OCD as we are about these things!

Some owners see vinyl as a cheap, quick, and easy way to change up the look of the car, and that is fine. There are plenty of cost effective options out there for changing up the look. We have some clients that swap out stripe kits on a bi-yearly basis. However, if you are an owner that is concerned with having the most factory possible fit and finish on your striping kit and intend on leaving it on for a long time, we think it is extremely important that a certain criteria is met with the production and installation of the vinyl.

Great post by the true enthusiasts at NS2

Here are some further measurements and detailed pics I had taken of my factory installed 911 R stripes. Measurements are pretty accurate, but trying to balance a cell phone and micrometer while taking the pic proved a bit challenging as is shown.
Also shows how the factory stripe's ends are not straight cut, but are rounded slightly.

These look great! Colors match well, logo is correct- trimmed a bit shorter than OEM usually does but if anything your version stays down a little bit better.

Yes, and of course the 991 can wear all sorts of cool eccentric designs as well. :-)

Wow, that looks incredible! We have rendered up the idea for a few clients but no takers just yet.

Who did you use for the vinyl and installer? Looks pretty much spot on to the Speedster concept.

Thanks for posting these additional images, really helpful. Good note as well about the edges of the stripes being rounded on the OEM stripe kits. This is one thing that is very hard to replicate if the aftermarket kit isn't pre-trimmed to fit the shutlines of the fenders, quarters, and door. The rounded edge helps for better adhesion as sharp points notoriously lift on vinyl applications.
