Not surprised and doubt Georgia will be the only state to investigate this shady practice.

California's answer to out of state registration enforcement is to create a network of snitches.

Local P car dealership here will not under any circumstances facilitate MT registration. While taxation is theft, cheating is cheating too. Maybe someone with MT LLC can explain to me how the insurance is handled. With a MT registration, one is taking a huge gamble on insuring in MT. Do the insurance companies allow MT registration with insurance and garaging in an entirely different State ?

Good! Finally! I hope they get everyone in any state that does this. Its fraud and tax evasion, and it costs me and everyone else more!!!

And don't come in here and debate that you're "legally" taking advantage of loopholes, you're not.............you are stealing, Opening a LLC in Montana FOR THE SOLE PURPOSE OF AVOIDING YOUR LOCAL STATE SALES TAX ON AN AUTOMOBILE IS FRAUD. If you live in Montana then all the power to you, good for you. If you have a company in Montana and choose to own and keep cars there good for you.

I have close friends here in NY that do it, and i tell them the same thing to their faces..............The truth, its wrong

Sorry if any of you who do this are bothered by my opinion, but i pay a ton in taxes, cause its the law, whether right or wrong.

I do think there should be some sort of collector exemptions so you don't get banged for 9% in taxes on 6-7 figure cars if you're in and out of several on a yearly basis, but until that's a law i will pay my taxes. I also think being taxed on a used car trading hands should be addressed, the car was taxed when initially bought. Again, till its changed, ill abide by the current laws.

Rant over

What if you are buying car and exporting to different country right away? Then you are getting taxed twice. Stupid tax law.

Man.....there are going to be a lot of unhappy folks here in Atlanta. I've been seeing more and more MT tags on exotics lately.

no, dont register the car, you wont be taxed. and if your exporting 99% chance its your business, so youll have a dealer license and wont have to pay the same taxes

Nah, I'm just moving out of country. Car is coming in soon and I don't know what to do. Register in MT LLC and import?

I hope someone fights. The guy in Louisanna fought and won. It is by no means clear to me what the answer is. What do people who snowbird do? How is that any different? As far as I can tell, you can’t register a vehicle in two states at once (I tried).

Good!

A couple of years ago there was some guy running for a minor public office who ran around in an i8 on Montana plates.

I looked into it a few years ago. Insurance was a problem. Also in GA you have 30 days to register and out of state car. I didn't want to have a roadside conversation about it that might result in me walking and my car being impounded.

This is a very interesting thread that goes beyond paying taxes on cars.

But- if my Accountant can find loopholes to help me avoid paying taxes- more power to him
