The funny thing I've noticed in my area is the guys with the most money nicest cars tend do it more than the moderately successful individuals. The way I look at it, paying and doing stuff the right way is worth it just for peace of mind. Gotta pay to play!

There are legal tax strategies and tax fraud. In my state, the Montana registration “strategy” is fraud.

Make sure you know how the word “loophole” is being used before you agree to any particular tax position.

Sorry, but that’s a blanket rationalization to cheat and can lead you into a tax fraud case. The minute YOU decide how much to pay irrespective of tax laws, you’re not on safe ground.

A friend of mine uses an LLC/Montana Plates for self preservation for his family(young kids), he just doesn't want to be targeted for bringing exotics to CC or any other event. I know some use it as a tax loop hole but I don't believe that is the case for everyone as a whole.

Once dealerships stop registering cars with local insurance to a Montana registration this will stop. Nothing against those who do it. If they are willing to take the risk, that is up to them. I definitely wouldn't want to get charged for felony tax evasion, which it sounds like they will eventually do. If you can afford to buy a 300k car, you can afford to pay some taxes.

Even with a profitable business in MT. How many of these businesses need McLaren's and Lambo's? lol

Good luck trying to argue with IRS that your deductible lease payment for a McLaren and Lambo is an "ordinary and necessary" and a reasonable business expense. Though I imagine there could be a few occupations that pass muster.

4K annual registration. Might bee better to NOT register the car and take the no registration ticket, here in NV its less than 100$ and a NON moving violation ( no points on DL ) The delta would be around 40 tickets per year, no cheating on taxes, just the traffic violation of unregistered vehicle. Of course you insure the car, no insurance is a $1,000 dollar fine and would be crazy. Just putting the idea out there

Annual registration fees of $4,000 in Nevada? Ouch. Generally speaking, Nevada is known as a tax-friendly state, and you're catching a break elsewhere (no state income, no estate tax, low property taxes, etc.). If the fine is only $100, the state is just encouraging tax avoidance (of the illegal kind).

Overall though, Nevada residents are a pretty fortunate group tax-wise. Californians, not so much.
