Default Breaking the 2:00 barrier at VIR

So after a very long hiatus, I finally got my 991.2 GT3 track setup finished and drove the car at VIR this weekend. Unlike my .1, I didn't do many mods - just a track alignment, a gurney flap on the wing, some 20" track wheels/R7 tires and some Radi-Cal brakes to replace the PCCB's that came with the car. I had only driven the car in stock form once at the spring Smokie's event.. The temps were on the chilly side, starting in the 40's in the morning, but eventually hitting the mid-50s in the afternoon. After getting reacquainted with car, I managed to catch a few clean laps and do a 1:59.5. I wasn't sure if I was going to go a similar route that I did with my .1 - 19" wheels, solid bushings, big wing…, but after today, I've decided to keep it close to stock. It rides great on the street, and can still post some great times on the track. With a little bit more seat time, I think a low 1:58 or high 1:57 is pretty attainable.

Postscript - While my time was impressive, what was even more impressive was the performance of my protégé…bhf_clt (also known as the Cajun Senna) He was driving a lowly .1 and broke the 2:00 barrier before me and his time was just 0.19 seconds slower than mine thanks to his 20k of suspension and aero mods. Video to follow.

Sub 2 minute at VIR is "hauling the mail!" Congrats!

I have the exact same set-up as you. Radi-cal big break kit with Ferrodo DS1.11's, alignment on stock suspension and 19" BBS forged wheels wrapped with R7's. I consistently run sub 2 minute laps at Watkins Glen.

It amazes me that our GT3 street cars can (almost) keep up with 996 Cup Cars. Just goes to show how far the GT cars have come.

Did a 2:01 lap my first weekend down at VIR a few years ago (with a race-prepped ZO6 with CHIN) but I wasn't familiar enough with the track to get below 2:00. Sub 2's is a REAL accomplishment.

I hope to get back down to VIR with David Murray this Spring. I love VIR!

It is fantastic that you are using/enjoying your car as it was intended!!

Look forward to seeing you at the next Spring's event. Should be a fun car on RA.

Thanks guys. Lesson for all the Rennlisters who are too focused on mods - get some pro coaching. I did a session with Jade Buford and got down to a 1:58.6 the following session. He is an amazing pro coach. Worth hiring at your next CHIN event.

Wow....1:58 on a stock suspension is SMOKING fast.

By the way, where can you get the Gurney flap you reference for a GT3? I've looked a bit but haven't found one yet....

Inoressive times at VIR! I am heading to VIR in a couple weeks with a 991.2 GT3Revs on Hoosiers and would be thrilled to be <2 minutes. At least I know it can be done on a similar set up!

The cars are so fast that it makes it hard to go much faster.
1.58 at VIR is fast
It takes takes tires, wheels and CCB rotors just to go 3 seconds faster on a 2 minute lap.

Im not that good at VIR, last year I ran 2:00 on Michelins, DSC controller and side muffler delete.
The .2 GT3 is within a second give or take depending on track, I estimate.

Id love to go back on R7 to see what happens.

Just posted the video on the track video thread. Here is the direct link. Turn down your volume - the wind noice is awful. I need to move the mic before Road Atlanta this weekend! I added the 1:57 lap with Jade Buford driving after my two 1:58 laps.

Video is posted. I had my .1 setup the same as Brian - Crawford wing, Cup car splitter, Cup Car caster plates and solid bushings, 19" wheels, significantly lowered suspension. It wasn't a very friendly car on the street, but it was super confidence inspiring on track with the low center of gravity.
