Default Big Brother vs Little Brother COTA Lap Times - 991 GT3/RS & 991.2 Carreras

Ladies and Gents,

What are some typical lap times around COTA for this time of year in either generation GT3 or RS or for any of the 991.2 cars? Forgive me for not knowing where to go because i haven't poked around the GT3/RS/R forum since we did the .1 RS manual swap.

We are headed to COTA tomorrow with our latest project which is a 991.2 GTS that has everything i could throw at it to make it more suitable on the race track and to try and maximize performance. It has almost everything EXCEPT aero because no one makes an appealing rear aero kit / wing combo for this car yet IMO. It does however have the entire suspension upgraded to monoball with Cup style arms anywhere i could bolt them, GT3 sway bars and adjustable drop links, PASM dampers converted to coilovers with a DSC module, MSI wheel studs & lug nuts, Brembo RE10 pads, bigger 350mm rotors, SRF fluid, stainless steel braided lines, 3 radiators, AMS intercoolers and our Stage I power mods that have it cranked up to almost 500 at the wheels in terms of both horsepower and torque. (We expect the power to be even better with the cooler temps arriving for in time for autumn - our dyno is an outdoor dynojet and it was the middle of the morning on a 95F day). It has been aligned, corner balanced and i'm using a 50/50 track setup for it with some camber but not a ton.

Before i go any further, i realize this isn't a true GT car and i realize it's not an apples to apples comparison. What you get for the money on a new GT3 or RS is rather awesome in terms of a race oriented suspension, bigger bakes, aero, etc. You get a street car that is more than comfortable at home on the race track and i have no delusions about that. This however was a project i wanted to do for about 2 years though and we finally found the time to execute. It's not nearly the controlled test that i saw last month at Road America with Steve's Cup Car/GT2RS shootout, using my good friend Brian Sellers as the driver constant, etc. but part of what makes these forums fun is reading everyone's thoughts, cruel or not.

Running the Pirelli Trofeo R tires, how fast should this thing lap COTA to be respectful? Any Rennlist folks attending the Edge Addicts event this weekend?

Below is a link to the thread i created for the car over on the 991 forum; if you want to see what's on it, the most recent 3 pages have the majority of the pics and a dyno plot below with a few photos.

Aim for 2:25 given that this is not your first rodeo.

Great looking project, I'm interested to see if the brakes hold up and what it runs!

Paging m3irish for comments on his very well driven GT3/GT3 RS lap times.

I think the P1 still holds the ultimate stock road legal lap record at COTA with a 2:16 or 17?

Either way- the changes in the tarmac and bumpy nature of the surface have really hurt lap times for most people in the last 12 months from my local dudes who go a lot

m3Irish is probably the fastest street Porsche at COTA that I know and have seen for lap times over the last 4 years I have been going to events. 3 years ago he was running .1GT3 with me as a passenger clocking 2:22 & 3's for a 20 minute session. I bet he is 2:18/19 in his 3RS. Decently fast laps are under 2:25 and few street cars under 2:23's at event like speed ventures or edge addicts. If Ben is there, he is one the coolest guys you will meet and he can show the smooth and fast way around the track.

That's hauling ***. I think that anything under 2:20 in a street car is probably rather impressive! If i can find him, i will. Thank you.

Thanks buddy. I will see what we can get. I have to assume it needs to be done in the A.M. I remember that when we were there in June and it was 100F, i could easily get the Cayman under a 2:25 but in the afternoon it was hard work.

Thanks CJ - that's your territory! It's amazing how much bumpier the brake zones have gotten. I do love coming to Austin though. I hope that all is well on the left coast.

got to 2:30'xx - what a great weekend - I think with some line adjustment in the S's I can do a 28/27, car DID a 28.xx in pro driver hands (Same weekend) will post 28 video soon

here is the '30 video

2018 GT3 991.2
PCCB w/Steel rotors
Michellin PS2 tires
track Bias alignment
dundon. quiet muffler (for laguna) so it's a slight bit down on power and slightly heavier than the OEM motor - but hey I can pass sound at a 90 db day at Laguna (my local track).

cold track - temps where low 50's that morning - tire temps never came up to snuff

enjoy! I had a super good time - and I think I could pull down closer to Robb's time, and maybe a bit better with some more seat time. Robb and I both feel a '25/'26 would be really really pushing it for this car…in this configuration.

here is the reference lap I was chasing which helped me drive my times down at this new to me track!! Big thanks to Robb Todd of BR Racing (the 2016 Porsche Trophy West overall champion - http://www.competentmotorsport.com/i...hip-standings/) for his help over the weekend. BTW: I don't think this is Robb's "fastest" lap he could do - I simply asked him to provide me with a target that I could strive for and he delivered in spades!

This video is Robb in my car, same setup, same track, same weekend, Robb did his lap Saturday afternoon, my fast lap was done Sunday morning (in really really cold temps).

Below is a video of our customer Juha with our latest 3.8L 991 swap in a 981 PDK car with headers and a flash. He is running on some old RE71 tires, stocks calipers and stock suspension. With some sticky tires, brakes and a shock/spring package, it's scary to think that this car could be in the low :20s. He's definitely wheeling it, that's for sure!
