Default The R - A New Idea!

This week I had occasion to look at the engine/transmission of an R at quite some length. The more I looked the more I have been tempted to try something new -- a carbon fiber transmission case. Do not know if it can be done, but it is worth a try.

Isn't Ferrari doing something like this with the transmission in the Pista?

I do not know but I would tend to doubt it. Having said that, I have never been very interested in Ferrari.

Wow. That’d be awesome. What’s the estimated weight difference?

My initial reaction was to question the thermal rates of dissimilar adjacent materials.
Wow, just looked, CF has a negative coefficient of expansion, but what about adjoining materials - can they get these sealed tight throughout all temperature cycles?
Since CF is not heat conductive and most aluminum gear boxes have fins because heat is a concern, will trans oil temps be OK in a CF box...or is forced flow through an oil cooler being used?

Very exciting stuff thx for sharing

While I would normally reserve the use of the word "awesome" for curing cancer, the end of world hunger or the birth of a child, as the last German car I can think of with a carbon fiber gearbox was the Audi R 15, if we can pull this off, it would be quite nice.

Loving the idea of some weight saving on my GT3, but only planning right now. I do need to phone my dealer to discuss warranty and exhaust changes as I am in the UK, with a 991.1 I need to be careful

Did you ever do a list of items with target weight saving estimate by item ?

My GT3 will be a keeper so would love to plan for an upgrade over time

Relative to the gearbox, the oil tank was

easy.

Agree. Also it's almost time to do the air filter box in carbon as well as the induction plenum.

Just curious Robert... Do you own a CF production company or are you funding the development of these parts third party? End game? Jus make your R lighter or a business? You obviously know what you are doing but wondering about the why given the cost to design and produce these parts.
