Toyo R888R on 991 GT3
Anyone have any experience running these?
255/35/20 and 315/30/20
Will these sizes even fit and if so will they mess with any of the fancy electronics? Had these in the past and they made a lot of grip. Would be a nice midpoint between R7s and Cups/Trofeos. Would probably still be able to drive them to the track.

You’ll need to look at the overall diameter of each tire....look at the difference between the front and rear diameter. Compare this to the difference of the stock sizes overall diameter between front and rear. If this difference is the same or with in a couple % as the stock difference you’ll be ok.
Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2
245-35-20
26.8” overall diameter
9.6” tread width
9.8” section width
305-30-20
27.2” overall diameter
11.6” tread width
12.3” section width
.4” over diameter front to rear differences
Toyo R888R
255-35-20
27” overall diameter
9.7” tread width
10.2” section width
315-30-20
27.5” overall diameter
11.9”tread width
12.6” section width
.5” overall diameter difference between front to rear.
So looking at this..... .1” difference between the 2 brands in front to rear overall difference is extremely small. Looking at section width difference with in .3” between the 2...I’d say this tire would work fit.
The Toyo R888R is these sizes is .2-.5” taller than stock sizes...however this is gearing up the car slightly...if anything gearing down with overall smaller diameter means lower CG and better gearing for road courses...but I don’t think a tire .5” taller in the rear will make much difference for a DE.
Would love to hear other thoughts on this. I’d think, someone out there has used the Toyo R888R on a GT3.

I have already gone through a set on my car. While I liked them on my 996, they did not have the grip of the MPSC2s on the GT3. They were better than the Dunlops. Also, don't go out on them cold below 30. Start there and bleed off as the pressures rise. Once you have heated them up in the morning and they drop between sessions you can go below 30 without problems but stone cold those sidewalls don't like low pressures. Obviously you also have to know how to warm tires up but that goes for most performance tires, just equally or more so for the Toyos. They seemed to like 33-34 hot and get greasy over 35-36. Also, the MPSC2s have a different shape that has a bit of camber engineered in so you may want to check camber after mounting these tires. I wish they made the RE71-R in GT3 sizes so I could get a comparison with them as they seem to do better with heavier cars like the M4.

Don't do it. Worst tire you will ever put on the car even if it is the right size. They are loud, no grip, and the architecture of the tire is not suitable for a GT3. I ran Speed World Challenge when these were the series standard tires. They were crap then and we ran them shaved. In the wet they are horrible. Worse than a MPSC in the rain.

I didn't like R888 when I tried them years ago. I was hoping that R888R is substantially better, but it sounds like it isn't.

The R888 was used in the Speed World Challenge back in 2008, but not the R888R. The R888R was introduced in 2015 and has only been out a couple of years.
I was running NT01's on my GTR when I had it and switched to the new R888R when they were released and was very happy. Excellent grip, lasted long and no noise.
I agree. The original R888 is junk, but the R888R is excellent.

This size post was about the NEW R888R tires. The old R888 were not all that good. I ran those on my 997 Carrera S and 997 GTS...then moved on to Nitto NT01 which I really liked a lot. I'm currently just running stock sizes MPSC2's on my 2017 GTS. I too am very curious about the newer R888R tires...because I set cost around $600 less than the Michelins.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure most of the posts above were about the old version because the right sizes of the new version became available just weeks ago - they launched with only smaller sizes earlier this year. Toyo did itself a disservice by not changing the name completely given that the tire is so different. I will try them in October or so on a .1 GT3, unless someone definitively tells me they suck before that.
