R vs 997 RS 4.0
These two cars seem to be the cars that are garnering the most comparisons. For those of you lucky enough to have either or both, between the two, which do you prefer and why?

I know a lot of folks worship the 997 4.0 RS, but this from one of the few people who's opinion on cars I trust, has always struck me:
However if one just must have one, this one that's recently been listed (for north of a half mil) is just perfect imo: https://canepa.com/photo-gallery/201...11-gt3-rs5734/

There is no way in damnation or creation I'd take a GT3 touring over a 997 4.0 I'll say.
R is way easier to drive due to lighter clutch.
4.0 is more fairy dusty and if I had to only have one I'd rob someone to buy both.

I can not comment because I have never driven the 4.0 nor the R.
But people also claim there is fairy dust sprinkled on the R.
I guess it depends which has more fairy dust

The 997 4.0 RS no question - has all the good stuff. The Mezger, the shorter 997 wheelbase, the heavier feel to clutch, shifter and steering. The 911 R is not even a close second in my humble opinion. A very close second is the 997 3.8 RS.

The R is an extremely enjoyable car to drive on back roads and even around town. I will take it on the track just to explore my own limits and how it compares to my 2016 RS.
I have never driven a 4.0 RS but I had a 2011 GT3, which I feel was a very different car, not in a bad way but the differences between the 997 and the 991 cars are major and I prefer the 991. The R is light, the single mass flywheel adds a lot to the experience, have the 500 hp with a 6-speed is just delightful.
Every car is different, and we shouldn't let car envy get in the way of enjoyment. I've owned 911s for 40 years and I have enjoyed every single one of them. It's not about how much a car is worth, or whether it's going to be on someone's list as the best Porsche ever of it's generation and how much money you can make on the car.

On Harris' comment above: of course new touring is better than the 7yr old 4.0. Every RS/GT product made is better than the 73rs or original R. The 992 will be better than the 991.
The 997 4.0 is the pinnacle and book end of the manual, mezger, hydraulic steering, no rws,etc RS. It is the best and last of its era. For that reason it will always be one of the greats. It is a historically significant car and the best of its breed. Whether it's more "fun/emotional" to drive than a 991 r/RS/gt3/touring is totally subjective. ALL the 991 GT product performs better than anything 997, 996, 993, 964, 911

I bought both new cars. the RS 4.0 now has more than 38,000 kilometers and the R over 7,000 kilometers.
So I have enough experience to decide between them.
To answer the question, no, I do not prefer either of the two. In fact, if I have a soft spot for RS 4.0.
When I have to summarize my thought.
the RS is dad and the R is mom.
if it interests you, I can give more details.
