GT2RS vs GT3 Cup Car

Everyone keeps referencing the GT2RS advantage on the straights, however, its important to remember that every mph gained in corner exit speed preceding the straight is multiplied many times over in terms of time gained by the end of the straight. This is where the cup will be able to make up for the power gap.

Close on spring rates, this per PAG engineers. It's been a while since I've driven a GT3 Cup, but the gulf on tires alone will be a pretty big one. Add in weight, chassis stiffness, etc and it's gotta be significant. And then a GT3 Cup or RSR with a GT2 RS-ish power plant...

The GT2RS will take the Mezger 991.1 Cup.
It will be close however, especially without Cup R tires.
Track alignment will be key.
I will be there to watch the street car lay the big dick lap down.

It’s all speculation, and we’ll know soon enough, but one more data point:
Just checked, and at Spa 2014 cup cars did 2.24s in qualifying, 2.26 race pace.
manthey 2RS (with their race suspension and development driver) did 2.35, and 2.31 on Cup R. They reckoned maxed out on a cool day you might take 2s off each time.
So that would be 2.33 on Manthey car, Cup 2s versus 2.24/2.26 Cup car in 2014. Pretty much in line with my guess at 8s or so.

^ Nobody in 15 pages picked up how most cup reference times (esp. those from the various official series) are run on Michelin N slicks... those are a fair bit faster than even Pirelli's soft GT compound. Subject cup at RA will be running what, DH? That'd be a +1.5s easily...

My prediction - sector time delta with cup car being 3.6 faster
Section Cup Car Delta Cup Car Cumulative
Start/finish to T1 +.3 +.3
T1 - T3 -.4 -.1
T3-T5 +1.2 +1.1
T5-T8 -.7 +.4
T8-T12 -3.2 -2.8
T12-S/F -.8 -3.6

This thread represents the best of Rennlist!
In the old days, it would take a car magazine such as Road & Track working with Porsche's PR team to organize something like this
Here are a few examples for everyone's reading pleasure...
https://www.roadandtrack.com/new-car...s-911-gt3-rsr/
https://rennlist.com/forums/991-gt3-...up-vs-rsr.html
https://www.motortrend.com/news/pors...-to-blasphemy/
The posts (and bench racing!) here from so many knowledgeable people makes this comparison even more interesting than one done by a car magazine.
Here is my contribution to the ongoing bench racing ...
At the Lausitzring with a factory driver, a Cup is 6 seconds faster than a GT3 RS
- The 700hp of a GT2 RS might tighten that to 4 seconds
- Older cup 2014 Cup vs latest 2018 GT2 RS with latest tires might tighten that to 2.5 seconds
- But a Road America lap is about 50% longer than a Lausitzring lap, so an equivalent delta would be about 4 seconds
- But Road America is more HP dependent so maybe that is worth a second in favor of the GT2 RS
So net, maybe the delta is around 3 seconds in favor of the Cup car
Look forward to not just the outcome, but also everyone's posts and continued bench racing!

Mission Accomplished!! This was meant to get everyone excited and thinking about how cool and great these cars are becoming. Glad everyone is enjoying it!! I’m getting excited also!!

These are the sponsors that have helped to make this happen!! They, like us, appreciate what we are trying to do and helped get it done!!!!

Sorry if I missed this bit: Will you be able to sort out timing with Road America?
Transponders on both cars would give sector splits, deltas, speeds, theoretical laps etc. Or is that being done with in-car kit like Vbox?

Good to see some smart sponsors helping out, I think when it goes viral it will pay of very well for them to participate.
So, where are we on the data/VBOX and do we have some proper videographers and editors lined up?
Less then a week away

Dude that’s the best part!!
The only way this would be any more fun is if it was over a LOT of beers while seated at the bar at Siebkens!
By the end of the night half of us would be fessing up to some stupid bet and stumbling out of there with our underwear on our heads...
