Default 991.2 GT3 oil change fill capacity / process

Updated 7/18/18: Info on the oil/filter change process and capacities is in the third post below.

Original post:

Hi folks. Went to change my oil/filter at 950 miles over the weekend. My owners manual isn't handy and I was not able to find an authoritative source for the amount of oil to use during a change. Can't get the PDF manual or iManual for our cars yet, either.

Can someone advise the amount of oil to add and how hot the car should be (oil or water temp?) before checking and adding more oil?

Thanks,

John

I wanted to update my own thread with the information from the workshop manual.

Short answer: Start with 5.9 litres (6.2 quarts) of oil, then check the oil level before adding more. The WM states that the engine oil capacity with a filter change is 6.4 liter (6.76 quarts).

Oil change procedure:
  1. Remove the engine guard (10 Torx screws).
  2. Remove the oil fill cap under the engine cover.
  3. Remove the drain plugs from the bottom of the oil pan (nearest the oil tank) and from the oil tank to drain the oil.
  4. (I also removed the drain plug at the back of the oil pan and got maybe another 1/4 cup of oil out. NOTE this is not in the workshop manual.)
  5. Fit new sealing rings (aka crush washers) and replace the drain plugs. Oil pan plugs get 30 ft lbs and the oil tank plug takes 22 ft lbs of torque.
  6. Add oil. Here is the specific procedure in the WM:
    1. "Add 5.9 litres of oil" (6.23 quarts)
    2. "Check fill level on the instrument cluster" (This implies that the engine has to be warm enough to take the 2 minute reading.)
    3. "If 1 bar (25%) is displayed, add 0.6 litres" (0.63 quarts)
    4. "If 2 bars (50%) are displayed, add 0.3 litres" (0.31 quarts)
    5. "Check the fill level again"
    6. If 3 or 4 (max.) bars (75% or 100%) are displayed --> Oil level is correct"
  7. Replace the engine cover and torque the Torx screws to 7.5 ft lb.

I got these from PDFs of the WM that my dealership sent me. The PDF is watermarked and my advisor asked me to not distribute the PDF. Maybe someone else can post a copy?

Also, I did not get the filter change PDF from my advisor but it's easy to remove. I added maybe a half cup of oil to the new filter and let it sit for 30 seconds before installing it.

The relevant pages are WM 108019 (removing and installing engine guard) and WM 170117 (draining and filling in engine oil).

Hope this helps others.

Cheers!

I followed procedure, after refilling with 6.5 Liters my dash is reporting oil below minimum. Any advice? I also measured the drained oil, 7 liters from the factory fill (this is its first change). Oil pressure and temps are fine. Any advice?

Add just a little more and repeat until in the green. Drive for awhile, raise decklid and try again. I usually add about 7 liters, so you’re close. The gauge is very sensitive and inconsistent. It’s easy to overfill...

I usually let the oil drain until I see oil dripping at one drop every two seconds, to get to that state it probably takes a good hour of draining on semi hot oil (maybe 100-120F).

with that, I usually put in 6.5 quarts and gets me to the half mark on the digital dipstick.

Always under fill and then add after you get a reading. Much easier to add than overfill and drain.
