Default ‘18 GT3 vs ‘16 GT3RS

hi friends - My current ‘14 C2S Cabby has finished its warranty and am considering buying a new 911.

Felt like it was time to “upgrade” a bit and was debating between getting a ‘18 GT3 and a ‘16 GT3 RS(prices of these seem to have dropped to the low 200s now - and roughly in the same “range”)

Some axis that felt important to me:

1. Amazement / wow factor (to myself) - the RS really feels like it takes the cake here and would really love to own and drive an “ultimate” 911.

2. TCO : feels like the RS has depreciated a bit, and the ‘18 GT3 will likely depreciate more than a 16 Gt3 rs given that the 18 gt3rs’ sound like they have a 40-50k adm.

3. Practicality - my intuition here was that the 18 gt3 was probably going to be more practical to drive everyday to work (i live in norcal and take the 101 everyday) because its a) not an rs, and b) a 2018 model.

what do you guys think? ? Am i missing other key variables i should consider? Are my intuitions roughly inline with what others here think/know?

Thanks for the input in advance !

(apologies for the double post - had originally posted in the aircooled 911 forum by accident)

Lots written on this.

Advantage of RS, more tire, aero, cf bits, can be loaded with extras like LWB seats etc... easier to get, and there are a bunch now under $200K, lots to chose from, screams look at me.

Advantage of .2 GT3 rumored 20 to 30 hp more (some say the hp is the same), stouter motor, suspension go fast goodies, higher demand, 2 year longer warrantee.

I only have the 18 GT3 with no 3RS experience, but there are many RLers who have owned both

Each car will have its own merits that we'll debate over but I would say it seems like you are leaning towards the 3RS IMO because your "#1 Amazement / wow factor" is just about the only reason why I purchased a car at this 200k price point... and you answered that for me if I was in your shoes!

Also you can't go wrong with either car, both are top shelf stuff so go with your gut. Great position to be in

One thing to consider, if it's important to you, is that the 1.1 RS has probably suffered a majority (not all, but a majority) of its depreciation; while the 1.2 GT3 is just starting at the top of its depreciation downward slide.

But, all that said, while some like to say "an RS is an RS" ... I like to say "9K is 9K" .

I think if I was going to DD the car I'd lean toward the .2 GT3. PCM and back-up camera are two very nice DD features.

The 991.2 GT3 is absolutely a better performance car. Real race bred engine, way more usable torque, and even better calibrated chassis. But it is not a RS, and will never be a RS. So it depends if you want the name or performance.

if RS, i'd just pony up for a .2 RS else you're always going to be rolling in the one without the race engine. 991.1rs will be the red headed b child forever imho.

.2GT3 has the 6speed justification.

991.1 rs outperforms a .2 gt3 on track hands down - much more mechanical grip and better aero

What are you going to have to pay for an '18 GT3? Can you get an allocation for a .2RS? If you can get an allocation for a .2RS at MSRP I would do that.

I'd say that performance is close enough that this should not be the deciding factor in one's choice. For me, I had to have Manual so the choice was clear...

If you don't track the car (and it sounds like you won't) and its primary use would be as a DD then I would go for the .2 GT3. The .2 GT3's ride is much more compliant than the RS and as mentioned the .2 GT3 has more creature comforts. All this talk about 'race bred' engine is bogus as you apparently don't plan on tracking the car and even if you did, plenty folks take their C2S, C4S, Turbos, Caymans etc to the track and have a blast with their 'non-race bred' engines that function just fine. All this talk about 'race bred' engines simply illustrates just how effective Porsche's marketing dept is at upselling their product. Have fun, you can't go wrong with either but for your intended use, I'd suggest the .2 GT3

I don't think so. It's still got a long way to go. Most are still selling at or slightly below MSRP. Depreciation hasn't even started yet. Wait until the .2 RS starts landing. . .

Performance is similar, almost identical on most tracks. Of course, the .2 GT3 is 7.3 seconds faster around the 'ring if that matters.

if you want a manual u want a manual... i was commenting on an above post saying the .2 gt3 outperforms the .1 rs... it doesn't if you put them in a controlled environment with same tires, same weather... track driving ***** to the wall, rs has more tire grip and aero, unless the track is all long straights where rs higher drag and slight hp disadvantage hurt it... but for most drivers who don't use these cars near their performance envelopes on track, yes it hardly matters...both cars plenty fast enough to scare you
