You call it pipe dream - I call it smart development that is guaranteed to sell out. Largely parts-bin way to transition to 960 replacement with development done for the RSR. Much much cheaper than developing a whole new car and drives more margin. Brings 911 link to factory campaign again and would follow the current trend of limited edition cars. The marketing story is to use it to sell the backing out of LMP1 so they could develop the car for the street...

The problem is Porsche doesnt need to spend the money to develop a limited edition mid engine 911 so why would they? They will sell out any limited car. Just empty out the interior, paint/sticker it, call it limited, and jack the price. Instant sellout.

With the 997, they made both a Speedster and an RS4.0 (and a Sport Classic) - couldn't they do something like this again?

To be honest, I am guessing....but I spoke to a friend who had recently spoken to AP who apparently told him that something very special is coming to see out the end of 991 series (in addition to the Speedster) and that it might not be a road registrable car in the tradition of the 964 RSR. Its the only way they could capitalise on the investment they have put into the mid-engined RSR platform while avoiding the huge expense of turning it into a road registrable car with all the zillions of compliance regulations they would face.

911 Speedster and Boxster Spyder sprinkled with GT Department fairy dust both coming. Also Turbo S Exclusive Cab. We know all this.
Beyond that is anybodys guess. Would love to see RSR-based GT3 and confident they could charge whatever they want and get it, but still seems a bit of stretch. Doesnt seem to fit their incrementalism parts-sharing model and all the big R&D and capex is going to hybrid and electric these days.
