Default HRE R101LW on Chalk .2 GT3! Wheel Weights and Details inside! - TAG Motorsports

With Porsche’s GT series the performance capabilities are elevating to new levels. And when it comes to a performance platform many of us do not want to do anything that is counter-intuitive to the engineer's creation from countless hours of research and development. It is always an argument of aftermarket wheels, and which wheels rid a car of performance, and what wheels are worthy of being on a high-performance car.

We wanted to bring some focus back to HRE Wheels answer to this need in our market. HRE Wheels engineers and design team have set out with the same goals as an OEM with performance, and safety in mind. Their goal was to create a wheel that would handle the demands of high-performance sports and supercars, and not diminish the performance, but actually, add to the performance factor. How is this done? Well in weight savings. But not just saving weight overall, but saving weight in the right places and the right way. Safety is still of the utmost priority.

R101's are more Motorsport oriented, so more weight has been removed from all aspects of the wheel but mostly from the sides of the spokes and the pocketing around the lug seat. Strength has been added where it needs to be, which ultimately creates a perfect track day wheel for your ordinary HPDE guy or your hardcore race teams. The R101 LW is specifically designed for individual vehicle models creating the ultimate in lightweight optimization for street use. With every vehicle model having a different load rating and power output, HRE engineers utilize this data to redesign the R101 for each model application fine-tuning each detail of the wheel to remove weight and add stiffness where possible. This is truly a custom solution, not down to fitment but also the design of the wheel per application. An approach where compromise is not an option, so much that the forgings come from the same supplier for other OEM’s forged wheels on their sports and supercars.

We know that marketing information can sometimes be vague, but working extremely close with the HRE team for several years we have the access, and ability to get the raw data that many have been looking for. While getting these installed on our clients new 991.2 GT3, we decided to do some weighing of the OEM and R101LW wheels. With and without the tires mounted and balanced. We hope this gives some insight into the weight savings possible with the right aftermarket wheels. The OEM wheels are already pretty lightweight for an OEM wheel. The R101LW just takes the weight savings to another level. 6-7 lbs per wheel are significant in performance.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to reach out to us, drop a comment, or give us a call. We are highly experienced and experts in not only the Porsche but the GT3 platform when it comes to wheel fitment, let alone HRE Wheels. Through trial and error, we have seen what works and what doesn’t, especially with the wheel and tire combo’s as well.

-20" HRE R101LW wheels in Frozen Stone Bronze Finish

We took some additional photos of the factory GT3 wheel, and wheel/tire combo compared to the same with the HRE R101LW. We know many people want to know what the weight savings is on the LW variations, and the benefit of upgrading to a HRE forged wheel of this type. The OEM wheels are already pretty lightweight for an OEM wheel. The R101LW just take the weight savings to another level. 6-7 lbs per wheel is significant in performance.

The weight differences are as follows:

R101LW Front: 17lbs

R101LW Rear: 20.8lbs

OEM Front: 23.2lbs

OEM Rear: 27lbs

R101LW Front with tire: 42lbs

R101LW Rear with tire: 51.8lbs

OEM Front with tire: 47.6lbs

OEM Rear with tire: 57.6lbs

Looks very nice! Is there a reason the weight savings are less with the tires mounted (between stock and HRE)? It's the same tires, right?

I'm assuming the differences in weight are attributed to the amount of wheel weights when the wheels were balanced.

A good point but the differences between OEM and R101 suggest 2lb's of weights added to stock !!!

It's a wishful thinking but together with weights other data should be provided. Like the rims' stiffness. Many would be surprised to see how these wheels deform while fully loaded in a corner.
As long as the material these wheels are made from is the same it is not always good to cut weight. It might compromise other parameters resulting in worse traction.
Works as advertising tool though. No doubt about it.

Bingo. Getting wheel weights is easy. All the lemmings out there make these one-dimensional decisions based on wheel weight when it's always about weight, stiffness and resulting durability. Vendors are guilty of selling to this simpleton crowd as well.

So I'm always like why would I pick these nice HREs over a set of BBS FI-Rs manufactured and designed by the same dudes who build F1 wheels? Heck, the BBS FI-Rs share the same assembly line as all their motorsport wheels.
