Default Toying with the Idea of Radio Delete in the .2 3RS...

Would you?

Increasingly of the view that head units aren't relevant if a car is to be kept long term. Tech in 10 years will be so different from today's, that whatever installed today will be deadweight.

None of the cars in my "long term" fleet ever see their radio used. The CGT and 964 radio codes haven't even been keyed in... (admittedly I lost one of them lol)

Downside: if some ultimate RS comes out later in the cycle and I need to sell the .2, I think a radio-less car will be much tougher to flog... and once you order radio delete, it cannot be retro-fitted...

If you're in the US you can't do radio delete any more.

The rear camera goes through the radio now so you probably need it. Unless you are a super tracker and only weigh 120 lbs and race all the time
the delete wont do you any more good than a diet or half a tank of fuel and may hurt your resale.

If you want radio delete, the “shelf” is $115 or so, just throw everything you take off (head unit, speakers, amp) and put it in the attic.

If you look at the cost for original radios even in the 997 era, they are worth a few bucks, so I can’t see not taking the free radio.

One last point, and someone with a factory radio delete might know, but I don’t think you get the wiring loom and even if you want to upgrade later that may make it very hard.

What evilfij said...

I agree that the radio will look hideous in the future so buy the "shelf" while they're still in production and once the radio looks hideous - do the swap.

Brilliant idea to just buy a shelf and replace... Agree that's the best of both words--thanks! Will look into potential problems (I'm sure it'll throw up a whole bunch of codes but there should be a way to delete the radio system in PIWIS)...

Honestly I'm not hot with the idea of a big screen in a supposedly lightweight car hence the idea of an empty shelf sounds sexy... I know I'm cuckoo...

Did it in my Spyder 981. Shelf from get-go and radio in the attic. Will swap it back in when trading in.

If you retrofit, the downside is that it loses originality. The rarity of having radio delete seems like a no-brainer.

if i can, i would ditch radio. it's an eyesore.
if gryphon or goldmund did it sure.
yes, you may lose a few bux at sale. but for you, that's small rounding error. just race one less weekend ;-)

i am stuck with radio b/c apparently amercans cannot drive without back up camera. they run over dogs and kids....

I'd do as others suggested; take the radio and buy the delete shelf from Suncoast. I did that on my GT4. It worked perfectly. Not codes no issues. Reinstall the radio when you're done; the car is more marketable that way.

Many thanks Chris. Did you reprogram via PIWIS?

No. never had an issue. I did use my PIWIS to code out my thorax bags so I could remove my seats and install race buckets. I never had an issue with the radio delete however.
