Default 991.2 GT3 metallic rattle at idle + 4000 rpm drone

Hi all
My .2 GT3 PDK is 1 week old, late November build, LHD, 600 km on the clock.
Since day 1 I have this bad metallic vibration on thick over, only when the engine is hot; it’s not a rattle from the rear diffuser and it doesn’t seem the exhaust.
The dealer stated it comes from the engine case and opened a “ticket” with Porsche...now I’m waiting an answer.
Here it is

Also I have a deep drone from 3800 rpm on in every gear (didn’t go over 4500 as I’m running in) in every...and some “clonk” from the rear when passing on some potholes, I thought it was the rollbar but a friend of mine has the same noise on a Touring Gt3 so not the case.

I’m wondering if it could be an engine mounts issue (new and electric on this car respect the hidraulic ones of 991.1) giving all the various noises...can’t think that this 180K euros car has problems at least in 3 different areas !!!!

Any opinion/help is well accepted.

Is this your first Porsche GT3? I ask so as to establish a marker for the issues you are concerned about.
Metallic sounds and tin like noises are actually quite normal for these cars.

Yes it is : )
But this is the only one of 4 GT3s sold by my dealer (plus other 3 cars that I know of) with that rattle at idle...
Does your’s sound like mine?

There are mechanical noises and there are metallic noises, that sound does not sound normal or organic to the GT3. That said I have a .1 not a .2. I will be in my buddy’s .2 next week and I’ll confirm.

Nope- That does not sound right for certain. Certainly bring it in and have them check that out.

Now- I did have some drone around 4500-5000 if you are diving in that range at a steady pace. Very livable but I have heard some journalists mention this, as well.

Now - I did put on a different Rear Bypass today and also disconnected hose to valve and plugged it. Meaning- valves are always open now( exhaust button no function because always on). Exhaust is loud as heck and love it. What I am now seeing is that transition at 3800 is very smooth and subtle now(great thing). But - I get some Drone only between 2000 and 3000 rpm. At 3000 it disappears. I will see how I feel in 2 months because very easy to reverse and activate the exhasut button again. I am thinking there is a very good reason the exhaust button exists to eliminate that low rev drone- Could also be wrong

The metallic noise does not sound right. As others have mentioned, there are lots of mechanical noises witt the gt3 that are normal, and some of the sounds may not come through well through video. I would suggest having another .2 next to it and listen to see if there is a difference. Again, from your video the sound is not right. Could there be something loose, like a trivial bolt or cover?

Keep us us posted what you find out.

Jimmy, would love to hear how it sounds with the bypass. Any possible video to hear it?

Awesome, will look for it. Easiest is to upload to youtube, then copy-paste the youtube code into your post.

I’ve had the metallic sound occur on previous GT3’s and sometimes on the current on. At all times the cause was the aluminum shielding around the exhaust touching or being too close to it. A simple adjustment rectified it.

I bet it is the heat shield - that is what is giving it the metallic sound

The car has already been jacked up at the dealer, they listened to it with a stethoscope after removing the rear diffuser and they stated the noise was coming from the sump...I hope they knew what they said!

I checked it by myself too and couldn’t find any vibrating heat shield or so...must admit that I did’t put too much attention on that specific shield but the noise is equal on both sides and seems to come from behind the wheels...engine area.
I would say something concerning the crankshaft as it can’t be a head issue on both sides!
Less catastrophic issue would be engine mounts but I never heard such a noise from mounts failures.

I’ll have my car back from the wrapper/detailer next Saturday and will check those shield (thanks Haku)...in the meantime I hope someone in Porsche will suggest what to do to my dealer.

Anyway really frustrating situation with a car that I’ve been waiting so long.

I am sorry you're troubled by this issue. You specifically mention that the noise if from behind the wheels...I know I may come across as a broken record but I still think its the heat shield. My understanding is that sensors or diagnostics would have picked up a crank or engine related issue. Keep us posted on the outcome as the info is useful to us all. Finally, don't let this mess up your enthusiasm for the car as it be sorted out soon enough!
