Default Plug-in hybrid 911s and turbo GT3s

It’s practically all but assured, plug in hybrid 911s and 992 GT3 3.8 liter turbo engine making 550HP! No word on whether MT will still be offered. Hang onto those .2 GT3 MTs...heck ANY NA GT3 at this point.

http://www.automobilemag.com/news/porsches-reinvention/

Based on this schedule, 992 GT3 would be MY 2020, at the earliest,

October 2018: Carrera 2S and Carrera 4S coupés revealed, with first customer deliveries February 2019.

January 2019: Carrera 2S and Carrera 4S cabriolet unveiled, with cars, cars in dealers from April.

April 2019: Entry-level Carrera 2/4 in coupé and convertible form launched, with sales starting July.

September 2019: 911 turbo coupé and Carrera 2/4 GTS unveiled, and will be on sale from February 2020.

So sad. I was hoping for hybrid NA engines in the GT3.

True! I still wonder why the technology in the GT3R Hybrid didn't trickle down to the GT3 after the 918!! Cost maybe...?

Weight. Not cost effective probably.

Oooh - is this like Jeopardy?

If so, my question is - "what are two cars I will never buy".

Perhaps 992 GT3 is NA/hyprid!
Is this a good or bad thing?

The article does state not likely until 2023 which would be more aligned with a .2 I think.

Yep. Just read a pretty informative and definitive article on the newest CAR magazine. Documents all the new models including even engine codes. New GT3 will be turbo. Sad day. My manual GT3 will now be like the new 2.7 RS in 10 years, or less. Look at what turbo did to Ferrari. When I bought my 360's, 430's and 458's, one had to be "in the club" to order a car at MSRP. Second hand ones were way over MSRP. Now, a brand new 488 will be discounted, and a slightly used one is heavily discounted.

That does not mean my car will now be a garage queen. I drive it several times a week, and will continue to do so. I am lucky I have one.

Not many years ago, Toyota ran a commercial for one of their offerings which went something like "Venge. When you're more than one thing.". My version of this was "Venge. When you don't know what the h3ll you are.".

Bad enough that the 911 will be built on a shared platform. But when the N/A powerplant is buried, so should be the GT3 badge. Instead of "boldly looking to the future while diluting the past" (or whatever the proper adspeak is), how about actually honoring the thing you are killing by retiring the badge. Launch a future "GTE" variant that establishes continuity between what is being raced and what is being sold to the public in 2020 or whenever.

Porsche may end up burying something else first.

I suspect Georg Kacher probably talked about this with Oliver as well...

GT3 typically comes in the 3rd year of a generation - so MY2021...

I honestly don't think this is terrible news. I imagine Porsche will dial in the turbos so there is virtually zero lag. The cars will be far more powerful, have loads of torque and probably be better than the 991 in almost every way. These cars will be monsters. But there will be some of us who will stick with our glorious NA cars, claiming the new ones lack the rawness of the 991 (lol), and don't have the NA character. But that doesn't mean the 992's won't be totally amazing. I am confident the boys in Stuttgart will nail it. Pretty excited, actually.

all of the craze and fanboy-ism (self included) over NA/manual will fizz out when the KIAs and Toyotas of the world are coming out with family sedans and minivans that match "old" GT performance. Porsche will need to advance the goal post--turbos, hybrids, faster PDKs, lightweight alien technology, etc etc.
the youtube generation will quickly sell and latch on the newest, best thing...

the next GT car will always be better, faster, lighter, and more advance than prior models. doesn't make sense to me for them to keep pushing old NA technology and 3 peddles for the next 20 years.
but I hope I'm wrong.....

Since I was lucky to land a GT3 Touring (which I'm keeping for a very long time), I'm actually looking forward to the 992 GT3 turbo (as addition) as long as they keep the weight close to 3000lbs. It is what it is, and I'm sure Porsche won't disappoint. It'll be baby GT2 RS and easily tuned to 750 HP... Why not?
