Backup camera - strange behavior

OK, this only happened once, but I wonder if it's a glitch or something common.

Today while stopped at a light, I took my foot off the brake and the car rolled backwards maybe 6 - 8". That caused the backup camera to come on.
I figured it was activated by a switch when the car was put in reverse, but apparently not. It made me look twice to make sure the car hadn't somehow ended up in reverse!

Has anyone else seen this?
I use the mirrors, so this whole government mandated camera thing is new.

yep it happens. I guess backward motion triggers the camera to come on. Scared the heck out of first time too and I did exactly the same thing to make sure I wasn’t in reverse haha.

Ditto

When I did the PCA IDS, my instructor was amused when I got turned around backwards on the skidpad and my backup camera came on. :D

It'll come on when you shift to reverse, but will also absolutely come on if the car rolls back for any reason.

Wait, does the new 991.2 GT3 have a backup camera?

Sure does. I believe US law says everything built from 2018 or something has to have one. That's why you can't delete the radio from your build, though someone apparently managed to do it.

Ah that's right. I've become accustomed to not having a reverse camera on my 991.1, but it'd be nice to have for a sense of security. Damn you lucky .2 owners!

Yep. Experienced the same thing. I'm guessing it happens on both manual and PDK. Mine is PDK.

I had an aftermarket camera in my 991.1 GT3 and it did the same thing. Software setup.

Normal, it's based on the wheel sensors, if the car rolls backwards, camera comes on. Our Macan does the same thing. The PDK will roll back a bit when entering our garage, which causing the camera to pop up.

Thanks all.
I guess I'm the one who is too lazy or stupid to look in the book this time!
If only cars had mirrors, all this electronic stuff wouldn't be needed. . .LOL

Any way to activate the back up camera while moving forward ???

If not; I wish that feature was available for say 10 seconds if you pushed a button

I agree. My Audi has a button to turn on the backup camera and it's very helpful. I haven't read the whole manual yet, but the GT3 doesn't seem to have this button. There's certainly room for an another button, so strange they didn't include that feature.

I feel like I'm a pretty competent driver. That said... you don't realize the value of a backup camera until you have one. You can back up to within inches of something behind you without fear of touching. It's a nice feature.
