Porsche car charger question
#16
If you guys are running this off the lighter, how do you avoid the lighter shutting down after you shut the car off? The lighter outlets in all my Porsches shut down after 30 minutes. I was under the impression that one had to run pigtails off the battery to actually keep a trickle charger on these cars.

Used to run it under the door, now I crack the window open ever so slightly...both work fine plugged into the cigarette lighter. My lighter socket doesn't appear to shut off as the Porsche branded trickle charger still lights up green after a week. Could I be missing something?

Which one do you guys use? I'm using the one in the glovebox because the one in the console has a smaller outlet it seems. Mine always shuts off after 20-30 minutes and I get the flashing error on the charger.

I use the 4.3 CTEK from Amazon (66 USD) and the cigarette plug in the console. The car showed 4 green lights on the CTEK unit (OK) and after several hours on the winter setting all 7 lights were green. No errors or other issues. No towel used for fender protection

I got this and it seems to be the best value. Has 4.3 charger, pigtails, cig adapter, extension cord, and protective case for the charger so it wont slip or scratch anything.

Tried all three outlets on my Spyder last night and all three shut off within 30 minutes of shutting the car off. No way to keep the trickle charger going.

When I had my GT4, I remember that there was some protocol that would keep the footwell socket active indefinitely. You had to have the key in and turned while you plugged in the charger and then removed the key. Should be something you can search for on the 981 forum...

I just hooked it up to the Battery... easy peasy... getting the 'negative' terminal bolt/nut off isn't easy... as it's sort of 'clamped on'... but with patience, I got it... and installed the battery tender 3amp version... I just pop the hood when I park it, and plug it in.
Battery Tender also makes an OBD-II port plug, that you could choose as a back up.
Best Regards,
Dave
