Porsche really said that? Was that your dealer or the mothership in Zuffenhausen? I'm in LA and I'm a 9k addict, but I have PDK. Nice to not worry too much about over rev/misshift, but I digress Mostly run solely 91 octane (sometimes I'll throw in 3-4 gallons of 100 octane if I'm near the 76 in Pasadena), but I know for a fact I can hit 9k on 91 alone. Can't find 93 anywhere but from my understanding 91 here in the US is the same as the recommended 93 for RoW that Porsche wants for the car?

Someone else may have reported this issue of not being able to get to 9k (unless it was you lol) and I think they found an issue unrelated to the octane rating that was addressed

I notice on 91 octane that my car pings on initial tip in of the throttle at lower RPM's (between 2,000 and 4,000), which is why I sometimes use 100 octane. I'm curious if others notice any pinging. Maybe it's the way I drive, as I actually enjoy feeling the mid-range torque of the engine.

How can you tell your car is pinging? Only reason I ask is because from my very limited understanding it would sound not too dissimilar to the noises the car already makes (rattling of marbles in a can) and perhaps throw a CEL. I thought that the ECU should adapt to the lower octane rating, and also that 91 = 93 ROW which is the recommended min rating from PAG but I could be mistaken

It's very brief (1 second) on initial throttle tip in at lower RPM's. I think the computer responds very quickly and it stops. When I ad about 5 gallons of 100 octane (I have the larger fuel tank) the pinging stops.

Get a code reader. If it reads P0324, it’s likely a defective speed sensor that causes the knock control to kick in and limit the redline anywhere between 7800 to 8600 rpm.

My new agate grey GT3 Touring. Did Euro delivery - this pic taken in the Black Forest just south of Baden-Baden. The wheels are not mine - they are the winter wheels the factory supplied as part of Euro delivery. Waiting patiently now as it crosses the ocean.

Did another test drive with the service manager today; issue resolved. Rev’s to 9,000 nicely. (Not trivial in pouring rain! &#128521. Very happy.

It’s actually not entirely clear what changed — they had detected some faults in the knock sensors, but didn’t replace anything. Could have been poor gasoline also.

Interestingly, I learned that

1/ there is a gas station nearby that sells 101 octane race car fuel (76 on Woodside Rd, Redwood City), BUT also that

2/ running 101 oktane always will overheat and destroy the cats.

I may run 101 octane occasionally now, or blend 101 with 91 when I have the patience to do so — as per what Chris88 said above.

Thanks again for all your comments!

jdyck,

Beautiful. Agate with chrome trim looks so classic. Seems like a few RL Touring owners are on or did ED recently. Enjoy!

I love the Agate with the chrome trim as well. It was my second choice.

The turbo whees look nice on the Touring, but amazing to me how they really change the look.
