My wife has a '16 Spyder. The top releases via an electric latch at the windshield. Then you raise/lower it manually and snap the buttresses in place. The top is pretty light and easy to manage. The buttresses are the biggest PIA of the whole process. It takes a little magic to snap them in place the first time. I would assume something similar for the Speedster. Would be great if the top were electric but certainly not a deal breaker as is.

My guess that the car will be released in Geneva along with the GT4.

What a joke. So you’re supposed to always take Helpful Hector along for the ride? Base Boxster’s auto-top looks like a marvel of engineering and a thing of beauty in comparison.

damn that’s a lot of work my boxster Spyder was 1 min tops, and I just left the thing down all the time.

Yep two person job if you need to get it done up or down FAST. But that was the previous version. So we await if this gets better or just the same.

I am getting one and the most if not all the time this car will have the roof folded in. On questionable rainy/sunny days, I will leave it in the garage and take the other 911.

LMAO
by "torturing" the users, it creates a "bond" for those who has mastered the "task"
it forms a cult
those smart are in
those dumb are not

I am dumb

this is how I operate.
I had a startac phone (remember those?) for long long time.
I don't want smart phone b/c to me they aren't very smart
until iPhone 1 showed up
my sister got one, in 3 min I figured out how to take pic, text blah blah. (note: I still cannot figure out how to operate my DVR or my TV for that matter, no I am NOT kidding. I cannot figure out how to turn the fkg TV on)
so unlike most, I don't like to be tortured. I follow a 3 min rule. if I cannot figure it out in 3 min. I do not want it
I went to buy a sport tourismo. I can't figure out how to operate the ctr console stuff. got out and left.

but hey, plenty of ppl love to challenge themselves. PAG should just provide the canvas and let the customers sew up their own top. and the customers likely will pay more for the torture I bet.

LOL! That would be mega-purist stuff! Like I wrote on the previous page: "A pain in the a** top seems to have become a mandatory feature of every purist roadster. No pain, no purity. Mazda should watch and learn — make the next Miata purer by requiring at least two rounds around the car to open or close the top. The more useless wings and buttresses that must be rolled and clicked into various places, the better. "

Best comment of the day, if not year...

Had to take a trip down memory lane with that video to remember the press car, as I mostly tried to block it out. While you don't need a Hector if you aren't filming a video, I remember testing this Speedster back to back with a 997.2 GTS Cabrio that did everything as well or better, looked better, could be had with either transmission, and cost (a lot) less. Video also reminded me of the two-tone leather seats (check that white leather…) and the aluminum-y dan, which just might be the most phallic 911 handbrake of all time. This one wasn't for me…

This is the video I used to learn how to operate the top on my 997 Speedster. It remained as a favorite in my browsing history, for the first 2 months of ownership. After that, I developed a 'Rain Man' counting system to make sure each step was done in succession. A dumb guy like me got it down, solo, in less than a minute. The 981 Spyder was child's play in comparison. The romance with the 997 Speedster was over shortly thereafter.

I didn’t follow this car much in 2011, and didn’t realize it was 200k. Heck years ago it could hit close to 300k adjusted for inflation. (:
