I don't have the current versions of either game, I'm one version back. But using PS4 and Xbox One.
To me Forza is more like an arcade game and Gran Turiso is more like a simulator. In the versions I am comparing - Forza had better vehicle sounds.
I have my consoles hooked up to a Fanatec Wheel, Clubsport pedals and manual shifter. All mounted to a racing seat which I've mounted on a carpeted wood platform on lockable wheels (to move it away when done). Also have a buttkicker mounted to the seat to give me engine rumble!
I'm inclined to stick with Gran Turismo series.

Polyphony hasn't put out a decent title since GT3 A-spec, or 16 years ago...GT has the most unrealistic physics ever IMO. I really don't get the praise for it's handling/physics. Especially if you're not using a wheel. If the car breaks lose it snaps around violently and it's virtually impossible to apply over steer corrections. The GT engine/exhaust notes are straight garbage. Even with the significant improvements made in GTS, sounds are still significantly subpar. Also, the AI in GT is atrocious. Cars take whatever arbitrary line they want, and crash into you during races. GTS also has a weak track and car selection. It's an incomplete game, with a very very limited single player/career mode. It's almost entirely designed for online play, which if that's your thing, maybe isn't an issue.
FM has realistic engine/exhaust notes, and the Physics are far superior when setup properly. No driver assists, and "simulation" tire and "simulation" steering. The Physics are very fluid, especially if you're not using a wheel setup. The exhaust/engine notes are spot on, and the car and track selection is top notch, as is the single-player career mode. Don't take my word for it, read the online reviews, GTS is garbage.

I bought a PS4 Pro recently just to play the GT sport. I have a nice wheel/pedal/cockpit set up from my PS3 days. So far I love it and handling is good for me.
Best thing is you can get VR experience. I know VR in the game does not allow you to race more than one other car. But you can still lap all the tracks including the Nordschleife which is plenty fun for me.

I don't have a 4K TV hooked up to PS4....was gonna look for 75" + screen this Christmas. But this might help delay that purchase. How does it compare in that regard? It's a 1080P VR set just like my TV....but is it really?

Sony 's spec is 960x1080 per eye. I feel it's on par with 1080 resolution or slightly less.

FWIW PEC Atl uses Assetto Corsa in their driving sims. Good enough for them is good enough for me.
