Hi guys, just after advice for optimal protection for hearing whilst tracking. Either just protection or audio as well.

I've started wearing custom foam plugs, which have electronic earbuds in them~$75 IIRC, plus the foam cups on the Stilo really help cut down on noise.

I'm not a fan of loud cars, too much time in the Army with loud noises, and it really gives me headaches. I've found its not always me or my car, but all the wide open mustang, vettes, etc that I end up around on track that end up irritating me more than my own.

I use plain disposable ear plugs. The need is not as great since I installed the Blackmill anti-buffeting things but it is still too loud for safety I think.

Further, I can hear the tires better with plugs in. Before, I could only hear wind and engine roar.

Drop by your local audiologist. They can make custom ear plugs for you with/without audio.

Ears are like snowflakes.... no 2 are alike.

Check out these plugs from decibullz. I use them in my Cobra which is extremely loud and they work great. Sort of like the mouthpieces I used playing sports growing up. You drop them in boiling water for a few minutes and then custom mold them to your ear. A step up in protection from the disposable foam plugs and pretty cheap as well.

The 'MAX' disposable foam plugs made by Howard Leight have a NRR of 33dB. Among the highest of any in-ear protection.

My Stilo ST5GT helmet has integrated ear muffs, if you're in the market for a helmet. They can be switched out for communication too. A nice alternative to plugs. Not sure if available in AU though.

+1 for the Stilo. Even with the integrated comms the muffs are plenty deadening.

This is a huge issue for me having pretty bad tinnitus. I love the Stilio ST5 ear muffs. I double up with ear plugs. I have tried a half dozen ear plugs, none better than these:https://www.flareaudio.com/collections/isolate-mini. I went with the titanium.

I use these while riding my motorcycles. Blocks all the noise. I had to get molds made.

Is it politically incorrect to suggest considering a turbo powered car?

Half of the reason many track NA GT cars is for the incredible sounds they produce in the 7-9K RPM range. Tracking with earplugs would defeat half of the fun of track days for me.

In case you're still looking for options - I have a buddy who uses Decibullz in his shop to block out the noise. They are less than $30 and are easy to custom-fit. Not to mention, you can retrofit "squishy"-style radio earbuds rather than pay to replace them for over $100.

The above article shows how to form the Decibullz and such.

i use the BOSE in ear noise cancelling headsets. I can still hear everything, be connected to a radio if needed but the noise cancelling make the frequencies tolerable for my tinnitus. Life changing. Hoping they make a wireless in ear one day. I'll try the flare audio now too.
