Default Montana Registration

Does anyone who insures with USAA register their vehicle in MT? Any issues? I picked up a Boxster Spyder and I'm not sure how long I will keep it so I'm considering going this route for the first time. Thanks!

I used to have USAA. IIRC they are pretty diligent on where the car is located/ driven and where it is registered....best bet is to call them

Most insurers don't care, so long as you accurately report who owns the car and where it's garaged.

Is Georgia tax that bad? It would seem like a Boxster wouldn't be big $ enough to deal with montana plate hassle.

7% so not unmanageable. However, I bought the car thinking I would keep it for a year or so then get into something else. Unless I trade it at dealership I will eat the tax amount. For long-term ownership I wouldn't mess with it and I still may not. Just looking into the details.

Hello Lodi, I did this a few years ago. Since then many dealers now refuse since ga started cracking down. I also had an attorney in MT give his opinion and he said I could very well be charged under ga law. I don't do it any more. I Just pay tax and move on. Take care, hugh

Thank you for the info. I just talked with my sales guy about this Montana plate thing. His exact words are "Porsche won't allow it anymore. Everyone is trying to do that. Only way is if you show proof of residency" Is he bluffing ? I don't see why this concerns Porsche, they get their car sold at the price they want.

Lawyer here in Ga, and I’m seeing a lot more of these tickets, which literally address tax evasion that pays for police and judges. Having not done traffic court in last 15 years, it’s a PITA.

Sure it’s exciting stuff.

False swearing is a criminal offense regarding where you live and Car is titled.

5%-10% advalorum tax from Ga dept of revenue. Month to month.

Failure to register vehicle within 30 days also an offense.

I have also seen obstruction charges as driver makes claims to officer.

When I go to these car shows and I see dark tinted Montana license plates I just shake my head. Actually know a lawyer who makes a lot of money and he drives around in an Audi R8 with Montana plates just ridiculous.
