awesome thread guys !!! I recently picked up a 991.2 GT3, which is fantastic, now I want to " downgrade" my current DD ( which is a macan GTS) ... looking for something less expensive that I can beat on , park wherever , use for surf trips etc. Im in LA so space is a commodity. under 40k . thoughts? My first consideration will be a GTI...

The best dual purpose fun and "surf car" for mw has been my e92 M3 DCT. How many cars under $40k have a NA motor that can rev to 8,500 rpm? With the rear seats folded down I can fit 3 surf boards inside. If I need to use the backseat for people, I can install the BMW racks in 5 minutes and strap the boards up top. The e9X series has the mounting points for the BMW rack system even with the optional carbon fiber roof. This car is also pretty damn fast at a race track with proper big brake kit, alignment (with camber plates) and Cup2's. For regular street driving around town I prefer my"beater" M3 over my other cars to be honest (911 Turbo S, GT3, i8 and X5).

I would go for the lowest mileage example you can find. Some pristine ones out there with 30k miles or less priced at around the $40k. The big unknown on these cars is the rod bearings...One out of 100 will pop the motor at random and you are looking at $20k or more to fix. So most people just do rod bearings from a reputable shop and no more worrying. Mine sees redline every time I drive it.

I was looking for a very specific build so it took a while to find. Figure out what configuration/ options you want and be patient. I wanted space gray exterior with black interior, competition package, carbon fiber roof, enhanced stereo, DCT transmission low miles and voila one popped up at a dealer 1,500 miles away and I bought it sight unseen $38k a year ago and couldn't be happier. This is second e92 M3 I have owned and the first I bought new and put a supercharger on it and beat it to death with 40,000 hard race miles and nothing went wrong with it. These are great cars and much more comfortable seats than in ANY Porsche. Might not be the fastest car out there but for the occasional street hooning it's an absolute blast. Name: photo282.jpg

Agree with you. Bought my first M3 Sedan brand new, beat on it daily, now I am on my 2nd M3 with competition package. Just can't beat this car as an all purpose vehicle. Pic of my first one. Current one is same color except with competition package.

Any thoughts on the standard M3 versus Competition Pack? Looking to get something to replace the old STI.

There is no difference in performance. Comp package ("ZCP" option) comes with slightly lower (10mm) suspension and really cool looking wheels. I believe EDC (electronic damper control) is standard on the ZCP cars and an option on non-ZCP and that is a must have. The difference that I have found is when you tweak the ZCP slightly- With camber plates (i use ground control) in front at -2,5 and upsized cup2's (255/35/19F and 275/35/19R) the car sits perfectly. Also is a pretty significant improvement at the track although I don't track the M3 much.
