Default 991GT3 & RS engine failures

How many engine failures are you personally aware of?

I recently witnessed one on 991GT3, not my car so I will keep the details vague. It is the second engine for this owner. No warnings or other anomalies, the engine just locked up.

Model year and any other details on nature of failure (while still being vague...)?

Was that the one that happened a couple weeks ago? There were two recent 991GT3 failures. One engine and one transmission.

These cars are remarkable on track, I hope the engines turn out to have the reliability we expect from Porsche.

All the exact same motor. No differences at all between the years.

The one I witnessed did - according to the owner. He said the first one engine was by the book as well. ...and I believe him.

I somehow stumbled across someone on the Porsche factory team in the WEC race tonight, and they said the 9A1 tenure will be very brief due to reliability issues and the move to fuel efficiency. He didn't expect more than 3-4 years years from the 9A1 - at least as the sole provider of thurst. He said there is a good reason we've not seen it racing yet. A lot of spin being put on things I guess. I hope it's not true....

He must have been referring to the variation of the 9A1 in the GT cars since the DFI 9A1 has already been around for at least 6 years, since the introduction of the 997.2 in 2009.

Take it with a grain of salt, I didn't ask his name. Was standing at the 919 garage. We were talking about the "New" 4.0l RS engine. His point was that they will be moving quickly to a hybrid setup, so the new motor won't get much development (compared to other platforms) He was probably biased a bit given where we were standing. I think this is all in line with what we're seeing, so it's not a miraculous bit of info. If the 9a1 was ready we would have seen it years ago. It's no secret there have been troubles with it in passenger cars - right?
