Japan Touring in a Cayman S.
#811
After a 356A, a 911S, and lastly a Honda S800, I've moved over to 987S.
With a good friend packing up his NSX project car for shipping, we decided to take a quick tour to Sodegaura Forest Raceway for the last 2018 round of the Tokyo Bayside Classic Cup:
Starting early, we spent most of the day swapping cars and enjoying some of the great roads around Boso Hanto.
It was my first real long drive in the 987S, and happy to say it has certainly lived up to expectations - not only the vast reserves of power, but also that great 911-like squirming about feel through the steering...
More to follow I hope!

non-Bose speaker replacement...
... as per here, going over my OEM speaker replacements.
Starting with the tweeters, from this recommended set:
Nearly, but not quite, plug-and-play.
Very happy with the tweeters, and next the 4- and 8-inch door units...

Something funny going on in Japan, late night work pick-up, drive home via the full Wangan as the Aqualine was closed - due to wind.
It was 22C when we got home at 24:00, when it was only 15C at lunch, and only 5C overnight the previous week...
The illuminations through Omotesando though are very pretty.

Winter in our valley...
Out for a drive, for lunch with friends.
The ginko trees look pretty neat if you see them in full yellow.
This is our neighbor's on a clear, still day.
This Beat was out, roof down, on a cold day recently.
Winter is the time to clear and burn.
Dark skies.
Dropping off some xmas boxes to the post office...

Thanks!
The car culture here is quite extensive, and I never get tired of new and interesting stuff...
An ex-R35 driver friend, now with a Civic Type-R wanted to try some more seriously focused cars, and with a friend they took a session at PEC Tokyo.
The Cayman S went along for moral support (and photographs).
Their chosen cars for the session were this GT4 RS and GT3.
Some of the rest of the PEC Tokyo cars.
Five spokes still a fitting style for the 911.
2.4S on display in the PEC reception area.
While not as clattery and as ragged as the 2.0S, the 2.4 still has that nice rasp and snarl on over-run.
This example appeared to have had a repaint, but otherwise - interior included - it carried a great look of a well-driven machine.
The resident GT3 RS was under-going a service.
Of perhaps more interest to this Cayman driver though was the car gifted to Ikuzawa Tetsu by Porsche, in commemoration of his contribution to Porsche racing in Japan and globally.
I've posted about Ikuzawa and his famed 906 before here, and it was great to see the matching Cayman too.
The vid is worth watching too, though I doubt that's Ikuzawa drifting...
They did a great job in matching the feel of his 906 from the 1967 Japan Grand Prix.
Being there to document reuniting Ikuzawa with his famed livery, on a 906 and a Skyline GT-A/B from his previous year's Japan Grand Prix, was pretty neat!
Some of the 906 details.
Team Ikuzawa 1966 (rear), 1967 (front).
I am not familiar with the Zero Angel anime, or why this itai-sha (hurt-car) wears a 718/2 wrap, but perhaps she travels back in time in one book?
Leaving the PEC, to enjoy the twisty bits south through Chiba-ken.
The Civic Type-R has this last week, been replaced with the latest (and last?) Civic Type-R in similar Grand Prix white.
Thankfully, the new one doesn't look like its driven off the page of a manga, and has a more restrained design with close to zero fake vents, needless wings, and other fripperies.
Lucky enough, I might be allowed to drive it too one day...

I think I can speak for the rennlist community in hoping you and your family are doing ok after the earthquakes last night. Tough way to start the new year. Sending prayers for Japan.

As to English, a good percentage of the PEC drivers are tourists, so English makes good sense.
Plus, there are a few fundamentals of English everyone in Japan can read - 'Porsche', 'Tokyo', and similar included...
Hopefully, that's it for 2024.
There's a wider set of photographs from Noto Hanto above here, but to show directly:
The photograph above was taken in the area of the photograph below.
Many other places we visited in the entry above, notably along the coast have either been inundated by the tsunami, isolated or destroyed by landslides and similar, or like above destroyed by fire.
We will however, wait a little while then travel back to spend money and support as we can...

Many without water and electricity.
One area (as photographed by @various cheeses ), the Shiroyone Senmaida Rice Terraces here, has 70 people trapped and isolated for four days now.
There are many mountain and coast communities still isolated, and the SDF is battling rough seas with their landing hovercraft in attempts to bring supplies to some...

Sorry to hear about the rear-ending!
It does not surprise me about the quilting either, as that's a typical Japanese response to many things; pizza, bagels, cakes, there's always a world winning expert of some sort here.
Toi, on Izu Hanto is in a great area:
The West Izu Skyline is a great touge, and well worth the trip from Tokyo.
Just avoid the summer beach crowds I guess...
Curiously, the last time I drove the Skyline was in the company of a few Yota-Hachi:
It was a few years ago now, so a return visit should be made!
