Used 16 F Type R vs New 718 Cayman S
So guys im in a little dilemma here, My wifes C63 lease is due in 4 months and we were looking at an F Type R 2016 with 3k miles ay only 80k CPO but then we saw a 718 Cayman S racing yellow at 80k but thennn a 2016 Cayman GTS with 4k miles is for 74k CPO (92 MSRP).
Car will be daily and maybe tracked twice in its entire lifetime. Which would you choose?

If you like sound, beauty and drama go for the F-type R. If you want fun, precision and relibaility go for the cayman.
now, if you do not care about the NA/turbo thing take the new one elsewise, tne GTS is the car to go for.

Interesting three different answers lol, about the F type im concerned with reliabilities so even though I like it its just keeping me off of it, about the caymans GTS and 718 S i am only concerned about when the 718 GTS comes out, will i be regretting the choice if i go cayman S or old cayman GTS?

You won't regret 981GTS since 718GTS will still have 4-cyl turbo Sure, a couple of horses extra, and a useful amount of torque low down but completely different (and in my view worse) character.

I much prefer the GTS in every category, including sound. The Jag trans is a disappointment (TQ auto). That alone would be a deal breaker to me, along with AWD (standard in 2016). It's A LOT heavier too, and I don't particularly like how they sound either. The Cayman runs circles around it, except on a straight line, but not by much, for what I've read. Oh, and the interior on the Type-R was a letdown as well, especially compared to full leather on the GTS. So one more vote for the GTS, and an easy one. I'd never buy a 718, by the way. Good luck.

Not quite the comparison you are asking for but I had a 2014 F-Type v8S Convertible tuned to 560Hp that I sold and bought a 2016 Boxster Spyder. Although I really liked the Jag, I really love the Sypder. The Jag was faster however the Spyder handles so much better. It's lighter and more nimble.
If you really like to turn, the Porsche is the way to go. If all you care about is acceleration then keep the Jag.

i drove both extensively
the only advantage of the jag is high way cruising , less cabin noise
have not driven 718 s
but cayman GTS is a fantastic car

Not even comparable IMO. Haven't driven the R, but my buddy's F Type S is a big heavy, slow, awful sounding car. Not even remotely a sports car.
Of the two Porsches, I'd take the 718 Cayman S, specced just the way I want it over a used GTS.

You are talking really two wildly different breeds here. On one hand, the big, powerful, GT cruiser and on the other a race bred, mid-engined, small light sports car. They're really night and day.
My suggestion is to some how spend some time in each. You'll have the answer at the end of it. Since I moved into Porsche most other cars just seem too BIG. Even my Macan is too big. I love driving small powerful rear or mid-engined cars. You may find them too small, too cramped, too much boy-racer. Other the other hand... the boy-racer in you may be awakened...
Plunk yer butt down in them, keep us posted and good luck on your hunt!

I drove the F-type 3.8L roadster when I was looking to buy a sports car. The car is fast, VERY loud (not in a great way) and felt like a hot rod - even being a brand new car, it had interior rattles. As soon as I drove the Porsche (especially having owned an '04 4S) it just felt and sounded right. My mind was made up instantly, and I never looked back. But, I'm not you. Drive them both, and see which one feels right to you. They're very different cars - if you opt for the Cayman, IMO a 981 with a six and a few thousand miles is the way to go.

My friend and i cross shopped the F type and the 981 CS.
He previously owned a 981 CS but had sold it. He figured the F type might give him the torque his cayman was lacking while still maintaining sound and fun to drive. He was looking at the S i believe (supercharged 6cyl?).
Anyway we went and drive it. The tq was there at low rpm but it didnt feel any faster. While the inside was luxurious and seemed nice there was something about it that felt a little outdated. Even more so than a porsche. What i disliked the most was the high area behind the seats (its front engine yet had i higher area behind seat than cayman, what gives) and big dash and low windshield.
Im sure the type R is much faster so if you just want a luxury cruiser (gt car) f type is probably better. If you want a sports car cayman all the way.

I wonder what the replies would be to this same question on the Jag forums...
I say get the GTS.

Jaguars poor reputation for reliability would steer me toward Porsche.
I instructed several sessions in an F Type R convertible. Nice car but heavy. More "brute force" and flashy. Very capable for the weight.
I drove a 981 GTS a couple hundred miles (it belonged to a friend and we swapped cars for part of the trip to the Glen). Sounds great (a bit contrived but still it's a good sound).
Heard the 718 start at the dealer last week. Sounded good but more like a WRX. Just depends what your wife prefers (this is her car, right?)
Good luck!
