Road trip...tail of the dragon
Paying hookey from work next Monday/ Tuesday to take the spyder down the Tail, moonshiner, diamondback, and Cherohala. Joining me will be a '12 991S cab, and a 991.2 turbo. Counting down...

I did the Tail of the Dragon on my drive back from the Porsche Parade in Vermont in late June. I was in my BS. Was late on a Wednesday afternoon, almost zero other traffic, was a blast! There was a bad biker accident towards the Eastbound end of the road on my last pass through that shut the road down. A rider had flown off the road and was about 150 off in the woods. Had to wait for the ambulance crew to go extract him. I believe he was not critically injured, but was hurt pretty bad. I think I read that most of the accidents that involve cars are because they collide with bikes.

Include the drive on Rt. 28 too. Have fun. Be safe.

OP / Top off the brake fluid if needed and order some new pads for the front.

Agreed on the Harley's and the traffic. Weekdays are the best to go up there if one can manage it. One time I even saw a big tractor trailer on that road. Isn't that illegal?

Did the Tail in my C6 Z06 a few years back. Drove it on Friday afternoon. There was quite a bit of traffic and one cop. Rarely got out of second. Even when I thought I was going fast I was only doing 35 to maybe 40 mph. Fun road that I wish was closer to Florida. Hope you had a fun, safe trip.

I don't think it's illegal, but I bet any truck driver that ended up on that road regretted their chosen route and spread the word to avoid it. Can you imagine taking a truck through there even with zero car and bike traffic?

I would have thought most tractor-trailer rigs travelling in that area would have been short wheelbase configurations. ( 36-40 feet)
Checking on Killboy shows that is not the case. Some of the rigs shown are 60-70 feet long.

The really best time is on a early Monday morning. Did my runs at 7:30am almost nobody on the road. By 9am traffic picked up, slow Harleys, pickups & q-tip tourists. 1st run 7:30 avg 45 mph, 9am run 25 mph. Even at the slow pace the road was just totally awesome!
My car then was a C6 Z51 and I had just come from driving school at Carolina international Motorsports, my instructor was Johnny O'Connell.
