718 Auto Start-Stop?
Everyone talks about the engine sounds of losing the 6, but this new feature is even more of unwanted IMO... can it be disabled permanently or it has to be done with each drive? (like in Cayenne/Macan which has no way to permanently disable it).

Just about every new car has that now. It is the easiest way for a manufacturer to inflate their MPG figures. They pretend nobody ever turns it off in their calculations.

I have a 981S and it has NEVER been turned on since I have rolled off of the dealer lot. I have pleasantly forgot it is even on the car. I can't think of a more detrimental thing to do to a motor especially in stop & go driving in hot weather. I rather burn the 6 ounces of fuel and keep the engine turning, water pump pumping and the alternator turning not to mention NOT having to use the starter 30 times in a 45 minute trip.
I am with the conspiracy group that believes that the 718 4 pot turbo motor was not about economy firstly but an attempt to move 981 /987 folks to the 911. I just got back from a nice 80 mile leisurely afternoon outing in the 981 and the computer tells me I averaged over 29MPG, as I said I have never turned on the auto start-stop
I wonder what is cheaper in the long run the start -stop saving a few ounces of fuel or a premature starter change out?

Not sure about the 718, but on my CGTS (981) the factory default is "OFF". In other words, you have to push a button to turn this feature on each time you start the car.

Great. Then you can set it either way you want and not have to bother resetting each time you start up.

I sure hope it is correct. I detest that feature. I recently rented a car (a Renault) in Europe that not only had start stop but didn't have any way to turn it off even temporarily. It was maddening. On that car it even turned off the engine when you were coasting to a stop before you even stop moving.

I have it on my Volvo and also dislike it. There's a disable button but it resets to the on position after restart so whenever I start the car I have to shut it off. Volvo at least put the button right next to the shift so when you go to shift out of park it's a quick flick of the finger and it's off. What a stupid feature.

I just found this in a review of the new Cayman in Motor Trend:
"The Cayman has a more advanced start-stop system for 2017 that kicks in while braking but still coasting to a stop. It can be deactivated, and the system wisely shuts itself off in Sport and Sport Plus modes."

Both my 981S and 340xi remember the last setting. Since I leave it off, I never worry about it. On my x3 the dealer had to code off as the default. Can't stand auto start-stop.
