I wouldn't call it necessary either, but it's nice to get all the assembly and break-in contamination out as early as possible. And to install a magnetic drain-plug (LN Engr from Schnell here). Done at 2,500 miles or so (like I did), seems like a good compromise if you plan to keep the car for a while.

That's the funny part. I went to both places looking to change the oil and both talked me out of it.

I think I'll just take a proactive approach for peace of mind. Like you said, it can't hurt. Negligence, however, is absolutely unconscionable.

Will do. Thanks for the tip!

I did my first oil change this weekend, in my 2006 CS. I only had 2900 miles on the Mobil 1 that was put in when I bought it. And that change only had 2000 on it.

I find that washing and maintenance connects me to the car, and shows me things that I wouldn't otherwise see. For aircraft and motorcycles, these inspections bring an awareness of the condition of so many parts, it is a safety item as well as a confidence builder.

I installed the LN Engineering full spin-on oil filter adapter kit, with magnets and magnetic drain plug. My 10-year-old original drain plug was rounding out from over torquing, and I prefer magnetic units, especially in a car with questionable internal bearing life.

Regardless of the necessity, I would rather to a pre-emptive fluid flush to know the contents and condition of my engine, than try to wring another 1000 miles out of the oil if I have questions about it or the engine.

A "$299 oil change special"? That's generous of Porsche to offer such a great special! Oil changes are easy. If you don't want to do it yourself, bring it to a indy and they will charge less than half of what the dealer is charging.

Default GT cars excluded?

so GT cars are more than the super $299 deal? I do my wife’s GT4–cost is about $60 for oil and filter—I did buy filter wrench and the maintenance reminder reset tool—but first oil change more than covered that

A $299 special?? WOW! My local indy specialist in Reno recently RAISED their prices and they are still over $100 less than that. Gotta love the dealer DEALS, huh.......

Just passing along as an FYI to those in the area that prefer to have their cars dealer serviced and are in need of an oil change.

Totally agree that using the term "special" to describe a $299 oil change reeks of sarcasm and yet the unfortunate fact is So Cal dealers routinely charge $100 more. No doubt there are cheaper indy alternatives, but then you wouldn't get that cool dealer stamp in your service booklet.

I've found many dealer service departments will price match so the coupon may save someone some $$ even if they go to a different dealer.

In SoCal, there are many dealers as well as indy's to choose from. They need to compete so they will price match. Here there is 1 dealer, and, only a couple specialist indy shops. The dealer, as all dealers up here do, price gouges all the time.

I just paid Porsche Newport Beach $330 to flush brake fluid. Porsche San Diego is going to reimburse since this should have been done during the CPO process as the vehicle was 28 months old when I bought it.

FYI, $239 at Walter's Porsche (which other So Cal dealers will price-match) if anyone is in need of the brake flush:

Wow, had no idea they were charging that much for brake fluid! I had my first change comped by the dealer (long story but they owed me) and I have been using my Motive for subsequent changes. Crazy thing with the Spyder is that you don’t actually need to remove the wheels to access the brake calipers, the Spyder wheel thin spokes give plenty of room to bleed each caliper.

The "Break-In" is for the wallet, not the oil.
