Sofa’s, PDK and Full Leather. He had a perfect score in street class so I hesitate to try and compete with him with my Spyder. Not sure if it gets driven much.

Piling on with pics, in addition to those already posted above by Afshin, of PCA's Orange Coast Region White Glove Concours held over the weekend.

Great Spyder turnout with three 981's (one GT, two Rhodium), one 987 (white/tan) and a special guest of honor in the form of a 550 Spyder (production # 550-0075).

Here's Jerry's Spyder:

Here's Bob's:

The lone 987:

I'm a nut for the 550's and totally buy into all of Porsche's marketing hype, which proclaims that 987 and 981 Spyders trace their DNA to, and are the spiritual successors of, the 550s and 718s of yesteryear.

So this is Chassis # 550-0075:

And here's a brief background on this particular 550:

Chassis #: 550-0075

The 550 Spyder featured a tube chassis, aluminum coachwork and a 1,498cc four-cylinder engine featuring four overhead camshafts, a roller bearing crankshaft, and dual ignition. 550-0075 was completed in November 1955 and was exported to Guatemala arriving on February 2, 1956. This was a bit unusual as most 550 Spyders were delivered to either a European or American address. The Spyder was silver with blue darts and had a red interior. It was delivered to the local Porsche dealership where it was prepared for its first owner, a Mr. Hubert Wiese, who entered it on May 10, 1956, in the Guatemala-Barberena-Guatemala race (finishing 1st in class) and subsequently raced the car on many circuits throughout Mexico and El Salvador in the late 1950's, including the Santa Ana and the Buen Carozon Circuits, with wins in every race until December 1957, when he sold the Spyder.

The racing history of the car is printed on the hard tonneau cover over the passenger compartment.

From the pits it was tough to identify the numerous silver 550s sometimes competing in the same race, thus the practice of coloring the tail spears (aka "darts") along the rear wheel fenders in different colors (here, blue) to enable the teams to distinguish their cars.

One of the things that I really loved about that 550 was the level of effort that went into keep the car lightweight. Check out the boars hair bristles they used to keep debris out of the engine bay.

And how about this nice little detail, perhaps my all-time favorite on a 550:

Hello Porsche Parts Department? I am in need of replacement boars hair bristles for my 550 Spyder.
Certainly, let me just obtain the part number and price for you...

Smile My Petit LeMans

Drove from NC to MI (5 States NC, TN, VA, OH, MI in one day) top down all the way coming back from driving the blue ridge hwy. One more bucket list item complete. I consider myself lucky in more ways than one but especially for a wife that enjoys these long rides and loves to drive with the top down.

Near the Northern end of the Hwy

Near the middle part of the Hwy

Home at last...Ashville NC to MI. Just over 12hrs.

Nice.

You need gas.

Why is your display mostly metric when you're in the US?

I'd be awesome to create a key like this Nick, but I guess only in the Gen-1's where we still have a metallic key. Sorry buddy...

Default Road trip to Arizona

Headed to Arizona yesterday for some R&R.

Just east of Palm Springs near Joshua Tree I spotted a strange looking 911 off in the distance. It turned out to be a 992 Turbo mule with camo and manufacturer's plates doing warm weather desert testing. Difficult to shoot while driving, shifting, and fumbling for my cell phone camera (all with driving gloves on).

Something about the desert . . . . So beautiful and yet so brutally harsh. Definitely in the wild!
